My dog is losing hair and has bald spots, weird odor?

I have a 9 year old Labrador. BIG dog that weighs 150LBS. While i've been giving him a bath, i noticed that he has this huge bald spot under his arm pit. To the point where it's not normal. It's bald, very dry, and makes him smell a little bad. He also scratches it a lot. I've been putting some medication on him ( wound treatment cream) but it hasn't really done anything. What is going on with my dog, and what should i do? I'm taking him to the vet but i want to know what others think it is.

Useful information?

its been going on for around 5 months,

he has it a little around his eye as well.

It's in Colorado with cold, snowy weather,
