How to be free in a society/world full of puppets?

How can I be free in our corrupt society. When I realized how corrupt our government was, I made a decision to not be a puppet to the system. I want to know how exactly I can do this.

    The slave seeks only to be free, but he does not hope to acquire the estate of his master. But the son will not only grow to be a father, but lays claim to the inheritance of his father.

    What shackles you to society is indeed a chain, but not one made of steel or iron, it is the chain of thoughts that never cease in one's mind. Why do you have a computer? Would you still have one if the rest of society did not? Why do you wear clothes? Would you still wear them if the rest of society did not?

    If you want to free yourself from the outside, you must first free yourself from the inside.

    I also agree with what the Advocate of Truth says and it's very timely.

    Long ago I was told public school was just a training ground to make us pliable sheep. So I set out to be a non conformist and didn't realize I was only exchanging one set of chains for another.

    And the other answer mentioning meditation, and other methods to free one self is a very good answer too.

    Try meditating on this thought.

    Tao Te Ching (78)

    Under heaven nothing is more soft and yielding than water.

    Yet for attacking the solid and strong, nothing is better;

    It has no equal.

    The weak can overcome the strong;

    The supple can overcome the stiff.

    Under heaven everyone knows this,

    Yet no one puts it into practice.

    Therefore the sage says:

    He who takes upon himself the humiliation of the people

    is fit to rule them.

    He who takes upon himself the country's disasters deserves

    to be king of the universe.

    The truth often sounds paradoxical.

    You cannot isolate yourself from the system without living in complete social isolation. This means no job, no money, no buying the things you need or taking advantage of any of the services or conveniences that society has to offer. It means living in anarchy, subject to the environment, to nature, under you can find the resources to build with your own two hands a makeshift home out in the forest somewhere.

    You really want to find freedom then find freedom from yourself? Dont be controlled by your instincts or your compulsions or your habits or your emotions. Choose when and when not to let them have any influence, but never give them a majority rule in any decision.

    You cannot make rational decisions for society if you cannot make rational decisions for yourself.

    Im in the same boat. What I am doing is trying to find other people who share similar views so we can grow an army of supporters to protest. One person is not enough but many people can do something. This is what I am trying to do and I would suggest you doing the same and finding supporters. I agree about the corrupt society and it does need a change. Once we gain enough supporters we can maybe protest. If I may ask if I can have your email because I would like to talk more on the subject.

    Take the moral course of action whenever possible, even if it causes discomfort. Sometimes the moral path, which would have been open to you in an uncorrupted world, is closed because of the corruption of others. In those cases, the choice is being forced on you, so take from those sources of corruption that hold the power only what you need in order to survive. That is the only way to have credibility when you condemn their corruption and the moral compromise that it forced upon you. It's your responsibility to condemn injustice, so it's also your responsibility to maintain your own credibility in order to do so. Another discomfort that will be used to corrupt you is the moral discomfort of seeing the suffering of others that you are able to relieve with violence. The source of corruption that is trying to overcome you will ask you to use or condone the use of violence to relieve the suffering of others, but not to stamp out the corruption itself that is responsible for the suffering. Don't fall for this. Remain your own free agent and your own highest moral authority.

    I agree with the Advicate of Truth.

    The questions is, how can you do that/

    Meditation has benefits, yet the results are vague.

    Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, are effective in clearing the mind-heart, and improving health, and cognitive function.

    They may not serve to enable an individual to clarify hiser connection between the primal urges, the uniquely human cognitive abilities, and the rest of life, called the environment.

    The best method i have found to do that is the one derived by Nichiren

    If our society is corrupt, it's almost certain that you, being part of that society, have been corrupted. If you want to free yourself, you must first become aware of how that operates in your own life, and how you are both the victim and the agent of it.

  • You are your own puppet master; you control your own life. That doesn't mean you can do anything you want, such as participating in illegal activities; follow the rules and your own heart, but don't follow the crowd (meaning: don't blindly follow society's view on things, such as "homosexuality is bad," "abortion is bad," etc.)
