External hard drive hook up problem?

I have a Samsung Hard Drive hooked up to a dock ( one that used to be a external CD Rom drive, but works fine with two other hard drives I have from other junk computer towers )

I Have a hard drive I am trying to see whats on it and when I hook it up nothing happens but a little thing pops on my Window screen-Computer-. It shows the Drive as Local Disk (E), but nothing else. When I click on it nothing happens except it tells me its busy ( status bar up top ). When I disconnect the USB cord from the computer or the drive, a message pops up saying I need to format disk. I dont know much much about computers, but I do know I need whats on the drive.

My lap top is Toshiba Satellite running windows 7 ( born with Vista ) and the drive is a Samsung Spin Point at 40 GIGS.

The drive came from a tower computer that was running something shy of Vista if not Vista.

I just want to know how Can I open this drive and explore it?

    Hi,

You will need to put the drive inside a pc to check it as it is most likely formatted in the NTFS file system and so won't work in an external caddy.

When you are ready to format it, format it to FAT32.

You can do that while it inside the pc by right clicking on the drive and taking the format option.
