Would it be a good move the House of Representatives to Choose a New Speaker?

Would it be wise to have a "Non Elected" Person to fill this position? Someone Like Mitt Romney to use his negotiating skills to help move the country forward in face of all of its Economic woes?

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (or Speaker of the House) is the presiding officer of the chamber. The office was established in 1789 by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, which states in part, "The House of Representatives shall chuse [sic] their Speaker..." The Constitution does not require that the Speaker be an elected Member of Congress, but no non-member has ever been elected to the office.

Update:

I have no problem with the meaning at all. It is clearly understood that the entire body of the House Elects a Speaker. T hat Speaker need not be an Elected member of the House. Perhaps we could bring back Newt?

The speaker needs to be someone who will not break while bending,

Boehner has proven he can not do that.

you have a different interpretation from what the writers of the phrase most likely meant. "members...chuse" implies that the choice is from among the members.

as to negotiating skills, you are quite misinformed. As governor of Massachusetts he "negotiated" with the legislature by issuing more than 800 vetoes. The legislature negotiated right back by over riding almost all of them. what ever possessed you to thing he has experience as a negotiator? as the CEO of Bain Capital, he was also Chairman of the Board, and sole stockholder. He never in his entire non-political life had to answer to anyone besides himself about any issue, he simply dictated orders.

the problem right now is the Republican caucus does not act as a unified voting bloc. there are about 40 Tea Party republicans that effectively block the majority from action. They act in the House like the filibuster does in the Senate. Because they do not act in any rational manner, no one, not even Speaker Boehner can direct them toward meaningful resolution of issues. That is also why nobody else in the Republican party is interested in becoming a new Speaker.

technically, the Democrats will have the largest voting bloc in the new congress and there has been some suggestion that Pelosi be re-instated as Speaker by a plurality vote. put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    Obviously Boehner must go.

I nominate a man with more intelligence, a better salesman, who would restore dignity to the Speaker position: William Shatner. I would have chosen Groucho Marx but he's dead.

  • What would it matter? Obama will not have any of it. Perhaps if it was Jon Stewart.
