Recovering data from a password protected folder from a hard drive?

I have a hard drive here that went and flipped it's wig on me this past week. The laptop it was in started giving an I/O error. The laptop is about 4-5 years old and has been used like a slavemule since i had it. Failure was expected eventually. I did however get the drive to boot up in an external case today and am pulling off all the files I can access through the base directory.

Now the question I have is how do I go about getting the files off the desktop when hard drive is stuck being used as an external?

The Desktop is a folder on your computer. On Windows 7 it's usually located at:

    C:\Users\<username>\Desktop

On other operating systems it might be located elsewhere, just search online.
