handgun ffl transfer age restriction law?

Am i the only one who considers the portion of firearms law "must be 21 or older to purchase a handgun from an ffl dealer" a complete joke? And not just that but ice heard of military veterans who were done with service before 21 and were more trained in the safe handling and proper use of handguns than some people are in there 40's. (Was in gander the other day and watched a 40 year old man with his son looking at a compact m1911 clone and obviously had no idea what he was doing but i, bring 20, cant evrn touch one without the salesman losing his job but actually know how to handle and operate one safely and effectively)

So my question is, was there an actual REASON for this law or is it truely just one of those pointless laws that claim to be for the better but really just inhibit a right that should be granted in full upon the reaching of legal adulthood at age 18 anf not just half of it (long guns)

I AM aware of private sales not requiring the buyer to be 21, and just 18 and older, so this is truely just a ffl question. I live in wisconsin however so im not sure if id be able to buy one privately as our laws here, while more fair than some states, are still kinda all over the place unless someone can prove me wrong about this state.

Update:

@lana, im not ranting.. if anything im simply stating what we are all thinking while also asking if anyone knows why exactly this wasteful law has been implented. No i have not served, but i dont understand why you are questioning that as if ANYONE should be exempt from the 21 age restriction for buying handguns it should be sane, honorably discharged military veterans (or even non-discharged ones).

Same reason we have a lot of the "loopholes," as the liberals call them, that we do. Because the government knows that people will assume that if you must be 21 to BUY(I say "buy" and not "buy from an FFL" because people don't even bother checking the laws.) a handgun, you must be 21 to OWN one.

Old world logic and liberal fear of firearms.

I'm under 21 and legally own a handgun I purchased in a private sale when I was a citizen of a state that permitted that practice for those 18 and older. I haven't went on a killing spree or robbed someone and I don't foresee me committing any acts of violence using this gun, a long gun, or without a gun for that matter. This is because I am a responsible and safe shooter, gun owner, and more importantly, American citizen.

Having said that, if you are not a responsible and safe shooter, gun owner, and American citizen at the age of 18, then you won't be one when you are 21. And if you are so unsafe that you shouldn't purchase a handgun until the age of 21, then as a law-abiding innocent citizen, I would prefer you not to purchase a long gun at 18. Hell, I would prefer you to be locked up in solitary confinement where you couldn't do harm to other people period.

And the government clearly thinks of those between the ages of 18 and 21 as safe and responsible gun owners, shooters, and American citizens. The government sends them overseas to fight wars and die for this country everyday.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no justifiable reason for this laws existence. Show me a statistic of people under the age of 21 doing illegal things with guns and I'll show you one of those over 21 doing the same thing. Hell, the same thing applies to alcohol. Yeah, people under 21 get drunk and are reckless and irresponsible, but as I type this more than likely, somewhere in America a woman over 21 is driving her car home from the bar drunk and a man over 21 is drunk and beating his wife. Irresponsibility is not age specific. You are not freed of stupidity because you had a 21st birthday.

    EDIT TO RESPOND:

    @Lana

    1. Too many people are old, dumb, and full of **** as well.

    2. I don't want to hear it. More drunk drivers, murders, and armed robberies are all conducted by people over 21. More people are harmed from people over the age of 21 per year than the occasional mass murder.

    3. How is it your business if I was or wasn't in the military? Besides, I know I have been to enough funerals and visited enough friends in the hospital to know what war can do to those under 21 and over 21. So I'm sorry if I am not a soldier but I take injustices against soldiers a little bit personal.

    4. Once again, what's it your business as to why I want a handgun. I'm not questioning your rights. You sound like the gun-grabbers now. Let me say you can't buy an AR-15, M1 carbine, or any semi-auto rifle and see how you feel about it.

    5. Just because that's how you were given the right doesn't mean it's a meaningful law. It just means it hasn't been corrected.

    6. I'm not in a rush to enter adulthood. I would love to take your advice, but since my taxes, rent, insurance, tuition payments, and job all treat me like an adult, I think I should handle my business as a responsible adult. Besides, who are you to judge? The last time I checked, me and every other person over the age of 18 is trialed in the Court of Law as an adult.

    No, not a joke...

    1. Too many in your age range are "young, dumb, & full of ***." As Mom would say.

    2. Please note most of our mass shooters Almost all school shooters are the under 21 crowd.

    3. Have you actually been in the military? Or just Ranting?

    4. What is so bad in Cheeseland that you need a handgun so bad????

    5. When your 21 you can buy all the guns, booze, porn, and hit every slot machine you wish.

    6. Don't be in such a rush to adulthood.
