Opinions on dog food?
I'm a 22 year old college student living on my own. I have a 1 year old Golden Retriever mix that has been on supermarket dog food his whole life. He's healthy, highly active, etc. I've always fed him what I could find that definitely had meat as the #1 ingredient but my options are limited due to income (yay college!) and I always feel like a terrible owner for feeding supermarket dog foods when people are telling me to go high-quality. I only spend about $45 (max) a week on my own food and spend about $20 now on my dogs food. Do people really pay for to feed there dogs than they do to feed themselves? All of this stuff I've been recommended is like $40+. Is it really bad that he gets supermarket dog food if he's healthy??

Humans can life on junk food, but is it good for them? NO. And neither is most Supermarket food for your dog. What you might save on food cost now, you will eventually spend later in vet bills.
We have two Rotties and we spend about $100 a month on quality food (50/50 raw and grain free dry food) for them, you spend 20 bucks less for one dog on junk food from the super market. Not worth it.

My opinion on dog food is to buy the best that you can afford. You are not a terrible owner for staying within your budget. Just tell them that what you feed is as high quality as you can afford on a ramon noodle budget. There are worse ways to treat a dog. Don't let the dog food nazis get the best of you.

It's fine as long as he loves it and it has all the nutrients he needs! My dog is 8 and a golden retriever mix with a little bit of collie and she eats supermarket dog food and she's still active and playful like she was when she was 1 (when we got her).
~Hope this helps!

If your dog is healthy and your vet has no complaints then don't worry about it.
I have Goldens but they have allergies. I do end up paying for super high quality grain free food for them to keep them comfortable and healthy, and I budget accordingly.
