must my dogs be certified to be canine assisted therapy dogs in Texas?

They are already canine good citizens. Is it legally required for them to be certified in order to be therapy dogs? We live at least 100 miles from the nearest therapy animals and I think our nursing homes and schools could benefit from this.

Update:

I was told by the nursing home my father-in -law was in if it was required and they said in Texas it is only required to be certified for a service dog but not therapy dogs. My dogs are already canine good citizens and are raring to go. Thanks for yall's answers!

I'm not certain if it's "legally" required, but when a owner/dog becomes a therapy dog team, they join an organization. This organization usually holds insurance for all the dogs in their group (just in case of an incident at a location) and to get that insurance coverage, the dogs are required to pass certain tests (Canine Good Citizen) and be certified through the group.

Since you live far out away from any group, you could always call and ask the hospitals/nursing homes if they'd want a therapy dog to visit and, if yes, what they require for you to do this.

Yes, they have to be certified.
