Should first class passengers be delayed by coach people?
I am an elite frequent flyer and log a lot of miles on several carriers in both the United States and abroad. I was recently flying from Atlanta to JFK, returning from a very important meeting in PAID FIRST CLASS. We were all set for an ontime departure when they suddenly announced that there was a problem with the lavatories. I was annoyed, but I understood. It was not until I spoke with a flight attendant that I became really annoyed. It was not the regular lavatories that were having problems, but the COACH lavatories. The delay wound up being nearly 2 hours. To me, this is completely unacceptable for such a short flight. I find it completely inappropriate to delay first class passengers due to some issue in coach or business. Sure, I would not want a bunch of coach people using the first class lavatory, but I guess it would be acceptable in an absolute emergency. I think the airline mishandled this situation, and the first class passenegrs should be entitled to compensation. How should I go about handling this?

how late were you? organize a list of just how badly this delay screwed up your trip/meeting/etc and send off an email to customer service

Depending on how many lavatories were out of service it could be a no-go item, meaning that the aircraft is not legal to take off without first rectifying the problem.
Although it may have been very annoying for you, the delay was only 2 hours, so it is unlikely that you will get any compensation from the airline. Passengers in Coach/Economy have as much right to have a flight and working lavatories as passengers in Business or First Class. They have paid for their tickets, just like you. The only difference is that they get less personal space, a lower crew to passenger ratio, and a simpler service in terms of food and drinks.
I doubt the airline will agree that this situation was mishandled, but best of luck to you in making your complaint.

Coach class passengers have a right to working lavatories. You even mentioned you would not want them to come up to use the first class lavatories. As far as I know, coach class passengers are not even allowed into first class. If you are so important and cannot tolerate being delayed by coach class passengers, I suggest you charter a plane in the future.
You can file your complaint but the airlines will tell you they did the best they could have at that time and they managed to fix the problem.

John, I'm a Business Class, First Class passenger also. This is how it is, If an aircraft has been detected with a fault at the gate, and they have to bring a crew in to try and remedy it, while at the gate, to get it finally in the air. No passengers can board, regardless of class. The situation may arise, that the aircraft may not be an easy remedy, and the aircraft has to be towed from te gate to a holding area, To get a replacement aircraft in.
So if you have already boarded First and Business, those passengers have to be taken off. In other words, whilst an aircraft is on the ground, with service crews around, the flight must be passenger free, unless an aircraft has had to return to the gate, by a fault being detected while taxiing. Passengers are kept on the aircraft, and will be offloaded if a replacement aircraft is required.

Unfortunately first class, business class, coach passengers fly together in the SAME airplane. Regardless of where any problem arises, every passenger just needs to be patient and tolerant when it happens. There are government rules and regulations airlines need to follow, eg there has to be working toilets during flights, and airlines don't want to be overwhelmed with complaints toilets are not working. If you don't ever want to be delayed by anything happening in coach, travel by private jets.
BTW COACH passengers are regular people too. As a first class passenger who has logged a lot of mileage traveling abroad, you should know how to ask for compensation.

As an elite flier, it's surprising you don't know FAA regulations.
Airlines can't fly if thing don't work = this includes all the lavatories... it even includes the coffee pot
= honestly, I think you are a troll. I've sat in hundreds of first class and thankfully, never experienced sitting next to someone with your horrible attitude.

Fortunately, we don't get too many instances of blatant snobbery on this site but your offering takes some beating. By your own admission you didn't miss a meeting but were returning from having attended one. The only loss to you, therefore, was NEARLY two hours of your precious time, something those of us who travel frequently often experience without complaint. You regard yourself as being superior and yet you are happy to stoop so low as to ask us, "a bunch of coach people", for help. The ability to think things through rationally and make common sense decisions is obviously not one of your strengths, but perhaps you were "born with a silver spoon in your mouth". Shame on you!
If you were to pursue a claim you would get what you deserve.........precisely nothing!

I think you're arrogant and your demands are completely unrealistic. There's no need to "go about handling" anything. The plane was delayed due to problems with the aircraft - these things happen. Live with it. You shouldn't be "entitled" to any compensation. If you are a "frequent flyer" as you claim you would already know this, unless your arrogance has you completely blinded.

Gosh, you do sounds like a posh, arrogant snob.
Why does it even bother you so much? You were flying home from a meeting, so it's not like you missed anything important, and you had your nice gold and diamond encrusted lavatory to use in First Class.

Let's see, how should you handle your "problem". Oh, I know. The first thing you need to do is get your head out of your behind. Your attitude is going to get you nowhere. Everybody cannot afford to fly first class. And just because you can or your employer can, you need to realize that everyone on that plane was delayed, not just you. GET OVER YOURSELF!

You're kidding, right? You need to get over yourself. I really do hope you're kidding, because this is why I have an unfavorable opinion of those who travel in first class.
