How much Benedryl can I give my dog?
I don't know if I'll give her any, it scares me without a vet's say-so. I'm just wondering if anyone knows. She is a mini schnauzer weighing about 18-20 lbs. She is itching uncontrollably and losing hair. She's scratching to almost bleeding.
We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning, but the poor thing is suffering so much. I'd like to let her at least be comfortable. The vet won't tell me over the phone, understandably.
Please no rude comments. I'm just curious if anyone knows for sure.
Benedryl is not untested on animals. Years ago I had another dog with a skin condition and the vet recommended it to help with the itching. It worked beautifully. But she was a much larger dog.
I'm asking to see how many answers are similar. I know you all are not vets. Maybe.

Your first instincts are correct - you should NEVER give your dog any type of human medication without the vets express say so. Sure, people on Y/A are going to give you information how to dose her with benedryl and you can also find sites that will do the same. BUT, they are not vets, they have not examined your dog, they don't know for sure from what she suffers - and dogs can have adverse reactions to ANY type of medication, including what your vet recommends. But, should the latter happen, you will have your vet ready to treat her.
I realize she's suffering, so you could probably give her a nice warm bath with some dog shampoo containing oatmeal to soothe her itchy skin until tomorrow morning. BUT, nothing more.
If the vet won't provide your with a dosage or recommendation for benedryl over the phone, then there IS A REASON! Just wait til tomorrow.
ADD: Benedryl can be very effective for certain types of problems - but, again, you have to know what you're treating. And, you won't know that until the vet can examine the dog. Even if someone on this forum is a vet (not too likely), it would be unethical for them to prescribe any type of medication for your dog since they have not examined the dog either and they, too, don't know what they're treating.

Benedryl has been used on dogs for years for skin conditions, and it probably won't hurt her. The usual canine dose is up to 1mg per pound, occasionally more but I wouldn't give more than 1mg without a vet's advice. Also make sure it does not have any other medication and is only diphenhydramine.
If you're super cautious, give her a half dose to start. But if the itching is causing hair loss and being scratched to the point of bleeding, this should have been seen earlier.

Do not give your dog any Benedryl.
Take it to the Vet as soon as possible, it either has a skin condition, mites, or mange, or bad diet which can all be treated once a proper diagnosis is made.
Why are you asking people on the internet 'how much untested on animals medicine shall I give an animal which trusts me to make the best decisions for it''?

dogs can have benadryl my dogs been on it for years but i wouldnt give it to ur dog without the right dosage from the vet if he wont tell u over the phone maybe call and ask them what u can do to relieve the itching while u are waiting for ur appointment

You should start with 12.5mg . This might be difficult because the standard human dose is 25mg and it is hard to find tablets. Benadryl is very safe, even if you give the 25mg she will be fine.
Some dogs get sleepy with Benadryl, others it doesn't do much. It might help with the itching.
Maybe ;)

Please call your Vet and get the proper dosage. They will know and you can give your dog the exact amount.
