(Ref Shootings) Why is there no conversation in the media about our failed mental health system?

Why are we limiting firearms and not focusing on mental health issues that both Aurora and Connecticut shootings involved? This is the actual problem. I don't see that restricting them from law abiding citizens can do anything but create more victims. This, on top of the fact that most of those in the media have no clue what a "assault rifle" sold to the general public in the U.S. actually is. We need to get nuts off the street. Not guns. If a nut wants a gun he will find one as we have seen. We need to reduce the number of nuts. Our mental health system is a sorry excuse for a public service thanks to the ACLU. As we bounce mentally ill people between jail, local hospital (that kicks them out asap), and walking amongst the public until they run out of meds or refuse to take them. And we say nothing about it. Nothing. 90% of the conversation is about guns. Inanimate objects. No talk about why these nuts were wondering, untreated. Or why it was so difficult for the mother to get him into a facility for help. Anyone ever think this might be a problem? These two individuals needed help. Only one got it but had to be jailed in order to get it and hes still not quite right. Thats not the way to fix our problem today.

I have 30 years service in law enforcement. I can't even begin to count the number of calls I have responded to concerning people that were not taking their medication or ran out and were a danger to themselves or others. The media would most probably fall into that category

Because limiting firearms makes it easier to control the population, and limiting firearms does a better job of distracting the population from other issues than looking at mental health.

You are correct, most of the anti-gun population does not understand the characteristics of the firearms they are seeking to ban. The media and liberals are doing a good job of confusing the issue to drum up support.

No matter what, shootings are here to stay. We need to admit that and we can move on to stopping what is impossible to prevent. The truth is, we can neither stop or prevent anything by the blanket limiting of basic freedoms.

  • The media was too busy barking about guns. The real issue is the mentally ill and drug abuse, but restricting the movements of the mentally ill would be violating their civil rights. Guns do not have civil rights, so they can safely go after the guns.

It's the basket cases who need to be taken off the streets, not the guns.

Perhaps because at this point, it's the NRA who is talking about it. Anything other than guns being a problem.
