You can basically play any Final Fantasy game with the exception of FFX/X-2, FFXIII/XIII-2 since these are the sequels to the previous series. Since all Final Fantasy games have their own unique worlds and chracters. None of them relate to one another.. Unless you are playing Dissida Final Fantasy on the PSP.

Depending on what system you have. Here are the list of Final Fantasy games:

    PS2:

    Final Fantasy X then X-2

Final Fantasy 12(XII) There is a sequel call Final Fantasy 12 Reverent Wings on the DS.

    PS3/Xbox360

    Final Fantasy 13 then 13-2

Final Fantasy Versus( Soon to be released one day)

    For older series:

Final Fantasy 4 ( SNES)( Or FF2 in US) (remake on GBA, DS and PSP<---- Much Better remake)

Final Fantasy 1 ( NES) Remake on PSP

Final Fantasy 2( NES)---Remake on GBA and PSP

Final Fantasy 3( NES) Remake on the DS

Final Fantasy 5( SNES) which never got released here but the GBA one did( Remake)

Final Fantasy 6( or 3 in US)( SNES) remake on GBA----Much Better( My favorite)

    PS1:

Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 ( One my other favorites)

    Final Fantasy 1, 2?, 5, and 6

    PSP:

Final Fantasy Crisis Core( Before Final Fantasy 7)

Depending if you are into graphics then play Final Fantasy 13 or start with Final Fantasy 7 with Full Motion Cutsences. But if you want to experience the older style of Final Fantasy then start with 4 thru 6.

Side Note: Older Final Fantasy series can be played on an Emulator and you need to find the ROM for them. Play on your computer.

    Emulator

    ROM

There are other ROM sites too

Most Final Fantasy games are independent from each other and can be played in any order. Only the ones with a "-2" or a "-3" after their roman numeral have a required order.

The Final Fantasy games I recommend:

Final Fantasy IV - The first Final Fantasy on the SNES, it was also the game that defined the series in ways that can still be seen in today's games.

Final Fantasy VI - The last FF on the SNES. This is one of the largest, most character filled, FF games to date. My favorite of the main-title series.

Final Fantasy VII - The first Final Fantasy on the PS1. Considered by many to be the best of the series. Very dated graphics, but not dated enough to be 'retro' like the older games.

Final Fantasy X - The first FF on the PS2. Another very popular game in the series, and the first to receive a direct sequel. Is currently getting an HD remake for the PS3.

Well, every Final Fantasy game is different. Every story, the magic system, etc. The only thing that really stays the same is the turn-based fighting style. You can pick up the games in any order and play them, as long as they are not direct sequels (e.g. Final Fantasy X-2, XIII-2, VII: Dirge of Cerberus, IV The After Years, etc.) All different numbered installments are different continuities.

I haven't played too many Final Fantasy games, but I agree with the poster above me. However, I would also like to add Final Fantasy VIII to the list. It's my favorite game and totally worth the money! The characters are likeable, the story is awesome, and the junction system, though complicated at first, is really fun once you get the hang of it.

My first Final Fantasy game was FFX, but I fell in love with VIII once I played it for the first time! You really can't go wrong with the more popular ones, VII, VIII, IX, and X. They're definitely worth the hype!

Each Final Fantasy game is different each one is different from the other (except for those extensions like X-2 and XIII-2 dont buy those) I would say FFVII is a good game and so is FFX I haven't played the others yet though so this is just from my experience

a million. No, because of the fact each and every interest aside from X and X-2 have distinctive memories and characters. yet i might recommend you start up with the older ones because of the fact in case you play the hot ones first you will locate it harder to play the older ones because of the fact they look uglier pix-sensible and function much less effective aspects. 2. there is not any longer FF conflict yet there is very final fantasy strategies that's a sequence of video games the place you build a party and circulate international huge scuffling with different communities on grid-based maps taking turns. Kinda like boost Wars or fireplace logo. 3. very final fantasy isn't too confusing aside from the early ones while they have too many random encounters and you haven't any longer any potions or stuff on your inventory. 4. there is an exceedingly final fantasy mmog (FF XI) and a clean one (FF XIV) coming quickly. there is the main substantial sequence of very final fantasy video games, an exceedingly final fantasy Crystal Chronicles sequence for Gamecube that are action-RPGs like Zelda, and a few racing video games for PS1. additionally there is the suitable fantasy strategies sequence that's a turn-based technique variety, and a few very final fantasy shooters for PSP and PS2.
