When visiting the UK, what is the best way to see most of the castles, cathedrals, theaters, museums, etc?

I was thinking getting a hotel in London and then taking the train or tour bus to these places during the day and then coming back to London in the evening. I am assuming many hotels in London, have their own tour buses also. Any information would be appreciated.

You won't be able to see all the Cathedrels and castles in the U.K. but you can see a great many of them on day trips from London. Tour buses don't let you control how long you spend in places and tend to get stuck on congested roads. We have a very dense frequent rail system and you can buy the excellent value for money Britrail Pass before arrival www.britrail.com

    www.nationalrail.co.uk (timetable information)

    Some suggestions for trips:

Windsor Castle Frequent trains from London Waterloo 55 minutes or Paddington 35 minutes

Canterbury Cathedral. Train every hour from London St Pancras International to Canterbury West

    (65 minutes)

Oxford www.visitoxfordandoxfordshire.com. Train from London Paddington every 30 minutes. Takes 58 minutes

Bath www.visitbath.co.uk Train from London Paddington every 30 minutes. Takes 85 minutes

York (very historic) Frequent trains from London Kings Cross. Takes 2 hours

Salisbury (Cathedral) Train from London Waterloo to Salisbury every 30 minutes (hourly on Sundays)

Takes 85 minutes. Also bus tour from outside Salisbury Station to Stonehenge www.wdbus.co.uk

London itself is full of theatres, both commercial and non commercial productions and great museums and art galleries www.timeout.com/london

A bit far from London for a day trip is Ludlow www.ludlow.org.uk - Has fabulous architecture, festivals, a castle etc Train from London Euston (change at Crewe) - takes about 2 hours 50 minutes

Staying in London is a good idea and most of the tour companies work out of the area around Victoria Station. The best thing to do is get on the internet and see what tours are available and book in advance.

Depends on what you want to see, and how long you are staying.

There are plenty of bus tours to Windsor, to Bath and Stonehenge, and to Hampton Court (on the Thames), to name a few. London museums, the Tower, St Paul's, Westminster Abbey, Parliament, and other sites in London are easy by Tube.

If you want to go to places farther outside London, you might check out a bus tour company.

Most of the castles, cathedrals and museums are hundreds of miles away from London.

Did you really think you could travel all over the country in a single day?
