Flying for the first time this week and I am very nervous. Anyone have any tips?
I'll be flying and I am extremely afraid of heights and taking off. I'm afraid I'll have a panic attack or something bad happen mid flight. Any advice to calm me down or help me relax during the flight? I know it's the safest way to travel and I tell myself that but I'm still very very nervous.

I always tell myself that this is going to be the BEST ride EVER ..as we are going down the runway. If you are on a small plane it will lift off fast. I hate rollercoasters and its never been like that for me taking off. I always have a really good feeling...like I am going to 'fly like a bird' and its going to be SO wonderful! Then the flight usually is. I get onto reading something or just looking out the window and being amazed at the fact that we can do this now and enjoy the beauty all below me. If you look up on interne't how to calm yourself down by breathing correctly' or 'calm your breath for panic attack' same thing..its breath in through your nose slowly..counting to 1-2-3-4 ..then exhaling through 'pursed lips' (like you are whistling)kinda forcefully counting 1-2-3-4.....this makes your heart slow down and gets oxygen to your brain and where its needed. My daughter , who loves to travel even to Europe still gets panic attacks but the breathing brings her back down to normal if she gets one on the plane. You should practise this now or anytime.
Hope that helps. By the way..do let the flight attendant know you are nervous..they are used to this reaction..and maybe they can keep an eye on you. If you sit by someone, let them know too. That way they can try and calm you down. I know in panic attacks..we usually don't tell people because we are too scared to talk. You will be fine..just tell yourself how great it is going to be-

Everyone's first flight is nervous it is fine trust me you won't even know your flying. The worst part for you will probably be takeoff, you'll be going 180-200 mph on the ground and then suddenly turn towards the sky and boom your off the ground. I fly alot and love it more than anything mainly because of the view. When your the high up and moving that fast it doesn't look like when your say on a skyscraper and feel that feeling of nervousness when you look down. It's more like looking at a beautiful picture. You'll be fine and can't wait for your return flight when it's over, now the absolute worst part of flying is airport security but that's a different story...

Yes it fine no worry. I had my first flight last May to Thailand 13 hours it was, and it was good. someone told me it's just like being on a train and they where right apart from taking off and landing. so don't worry.
