    ..._____

    9 ) 4000

Take the first digit of the dividend 4000 (4). Does the divisor 9 fit in it? No, 4 is too small, 9 is too big.

Add the next digit of 4000, to get 40. Does 9 fit in it? Yes.

Divide 9 into 40. Figure out the biggest multiple of 9 that is less than or equal to the 40. That is 36, which is 9x4. 9 goes into 40 4 times, with 4 left over. Place a 4 (the first one) above the last digit of 40, and subtract 36 from 40.

    ...__4__

    9 ) 4000

    ....-36

    ....----

    .......4

Bring down the next digit of the dividend 4000, next to the number at the bottom, and divide the divisor 9 into the number that results (40 again). Like before, subtract the multiple of 9 (36) from the 40 and put 4 (36÷9) in the answer and bring down the next digit of the dividend and divide similarly.

    ...__4__

    9 ) 4000

    ....-36

    ....----

    .......40

    ...__44_

    9 ) 4000

    ....-36

    ....----

    .......40

    .....-36

    .....-----

    .........40

Divide 9 into the 40 at the bottom, like before.

In this problem you end up dividing 9 into 40 every time, including when you get to the decimal part. Since the given numbers don't divide evenly, when you have used up the digits in the dividend, tack on a decimal point and zeroes, on the dividend, and continue dividing like before. Make the dividend 4000.00... Put a decimal point in the answer, directly above the decimal point in the dividend.

You can round the answer to two decimal places (dividing as far as three decimal places and then rounding based on that third place). In this case you have a repeating decimal, since the divisor is divided into the same number in each step, and you have the option to write the answer as a repeating decimal.

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . _

444.44 (rounded to two decimal places) or 444.4 (bar above the 4 that repeats in the decimal part)

I'll try my best: (the periods are just for spacing)

    you have:

    .._____

    9|4000

because 9 doesn't go into 4, 9 has to go into 40. because 9 doesn't go into 40, you have to do the closest multiple of 9 that's less than 40. So now you have 9 x 4 = 36

    ...4__

    9|4000

    ..-36

    ...=

    ....4

Now bring down the 0's and repeat the process.

    _444.44

    9|4000

    It'll be

    Therefor, 4000/9 = 444.44 repeat

    Hope that helps!
