Hey there! What are your favorite popular and unknown artists from the following genres?

Hi guys.

I'm on my quest to both re-discover old marvels and discover new marvels within the genres of music I'm mostly into. That is why this question exists and shall exist until deletion.

Please, name your top 3 (I won't limit you: name as many as you like) artists from the popular and unknown spectrum of the following genres;

Progressive Metal

Progressive Rock

Thrash Metal

Heavy Metal

Hard Rock

Classic Rock

Jazz Fusion

Stoner Rock/Metal

Psychedelic/Space Rock

Doom Metal

Post-Rock/Metal

An example of what I'm looking for would be;

Heavy Metal

{Popular} Dio || Judas Priest || Iron Maiden

{Unknown} Riot || White Wizzard || Alice Cooper

Thanks!

BQ: What's your favorite genre from the above list?

BQ2: How do you feel about politics?

I don't know about them being unknown, as I listen to mostly mainstream pop (popular) music, but i'll give it a shot.

Progressive Metal: Not a big fan of this genre. I would go with Tool and Opeth, even though I think Opeth isn't 100% prog metal. And for tool, i'm not a huge fan of them anyways.

Progressive Rock: Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Can and Jethro Tull

Thrash Metal: Like I stated above, i'm not a huge fan of metal. Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer (not a huge fan of Slayer)

Hard Rock: Not a big fan of hard rock either, but Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Stooges (Punk & Hard Rock) and Rainbow

Classic Rock: that's not a genre of music

Jazz Fusion: Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock and Soft Machine.

Stone Rock/Metal: Kyuss & Queens Of The Stone Age

Psychedelic Rock/Space Rock: Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Can, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Flaming Lips, Spiritualized, Deerhunter, Jefferson Airplane & Spacemen 3

Doom Metal: Sorry, not a fan. Does Opeth count, though?

Post-Rock: Sigur Ros, Explosions In the Sky, Mogwai, Slint, Talk Talk, GSY!BE, Swans,

    Neurosis, Tortoise and etc.

BQ: In this order: 1.) Post Rock, 2.) Progressive Rock and 3.) Psychedelic Rock

BQ2: Concerned about them, but it's always been like that. It will get better than worse but ultimately, i'm sure we'll prevail. Just gotta say optimistic and compromise

I suck at genres, but I'll give it a shot...

Progressive Metal - Can't say too much about it, I like Opeth and I would classify Beardfish's last album The Void as progressive metal.

Progressive Rock - Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, etc. for the popular, Italian prog bands like Il Paese Dei Balocchi, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Campo di Marte, etc. for unknown.

Classic Rock - Beatles, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, etc.

Jazz Fusion - Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Soft Machine; Cos, Hatfield and the North, Pekka Pohjola

Psychedelic/Space Rock - Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Gong; Kingston Wall, My Brother the Wind, Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, Yatha Sidhra

Post-Rock/Metal - maudlin of the Well, My Sleeping Karma, Future Kings of England

That's pretty much all I got.

    BQ: I guess progressive rock.

    BQ2: Sad but unrealistically optimistic.

    Noah Guthrie

    Sean Rumsey

  • Alice Cooper unknown? :P anyway..lets see what i can do with this..

    Prog Metal :

{Pop} - Dream Theater, Death, Mastodon, Opeth, Kamelot

{Underdogs} - Fates Warning, Eccentric Pendulum, Believer, Savatage (especially their 90s era), Pain of Salvation, Psychotic Waltz, Voivod blah blah blah..i can go on and on!

    Prog Rock/ Psychedelic :

{Pop} - Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Storm Corrosion, Rush

{Underdogs} - Premiata Forneria Marconi, Wishbone Ash, Karmakanic, Anglagard, Camel, Magma, Riverside, Oranssi Pazuzu (check out these guys! psychedelic black metal!)

    Thrash Metal :

{Pop} - Megadeth, Annihilator, Slayer, Sepultura, Testament

{Underdogs} - Coroner, Artillery, Aspid, Demolition Hammer, Dark Angel, Sadus, Morbid Saint

    Heavy Metal :

{Pop} - Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Pantera,

{Underdogs} - King Diamond (yeah i think they're really underrated!), Sanctuary, Nevermore

Hard Rock/Classic Rock (I consider rock/hard rock/classic rock to be the same) :

{Pop} - Deep Purple, ZZ Top, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Rainbow

{Underdogs} - Graveyard (perhaps the only underground hard rock band i like..haven't explored others to be honest)

    Jazz Fusion :

{Pop} - Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa, Dixie Dregs

{Underdogs} - Return to Forever, Panzerballett, Guthrie Govan, Tribal Tech

    Stoner/Post-Rock Metal :

Please don't mind if i combine these 2..Most of the stoner bands that i listen to have a lot of post rock/metal influences and vice versa..

    {Pop} - Neurosis, Isis, Sleep

{Underdogs} - OM, Acid Witch, Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, Blindead, Boris

    Doom Metal :

{Pop} - Electric Wizard, My Dying Bride

{Underdogs} - Saint Vitus, Swallow the Sun, Orphaned Land, Empyrium

Sorry if i made mistakes in the classification..m not too good with genres..

BA : Tough to say..i mean..my favourite type of music would be a mixture of prog metal + your last 5 genres. There are quite a few bands that fall in that category..not entirely..but quite close..like Agalloch, Deathspell Omega, Primordial, OM, Negura Bunget etc..and then i also like those bands that i mentioned under 'prog metal'..so my fav genres would be :

Prog Metal (fusion of eastern influences in a big plus!)

    Technical Prog Death Metal

Prog Black Metal (i like some folk fused too)

Post Rock / Metal (I'm starting to really enjoy this style)

BA2 : I dont like talking about it too much..
