You are an idiot and this is an idiotic question. I have owned guns for years including an SKS and an AR-15 and I haven't gone on a mass killing spree nor will I ever. You are more likely to die in a fall or in an Automobile accident than you are by any type of gun.

I have yet to hear a clear definition of what an assault weapon is. I gather from the media that it is anything that is black and has a pistol grip and a detachable magazine. Plenty of hunting rifles have detachable mags and are semi automatic, so that leaves just pure cosmetics and plastic. A Ruger Mini-14 is functionally the same as a 5.56 mm AR15, but because it has a wooden stock it will never comes up in conversation. 30 round clips are definitely justified in a situation with multiple assailants, especially in a WROL (without rule of law) situation like Katrina or the LA riots (google Koreatown riots).

Just recently a woman in Georgia emptied a 6 shot 38 caliber revolver into an intruder and he got up and drove away. If he had an accomplice or 2, she would have been screwed. Obviously I would take a 6 shooter over nothing, but she was lucky to only have to deal with one attacker.

Hmm in over 40 years of gun possession I've by no means heard of an AR-17. Now i have an AR-15 which in view that it's a Semi-automatic rifle (practically 100 yr old technological know-how) is by way of definition not an Assault Rifle and it does be given 20 and 30 round magazines (not clips). I exploit mine in nationally sanctioned hi vigor rifle suits (competitions), for recreational shooting and for other lawful purposes. Why is it authorized to possess a Porsche (assault auto) when it's most effective reason is to be capable to our run the police? I don't even need to add to the answers you already received, they make valid points. Millions of guns in the US are silent and unused every single day by law abiding citizens. Guns are used every day in the US by a criminal element who don't care about laws, it's in their nature. I like to keep my "assault weapons" and 30 round magazines because I like to go to the range and shoot it and not have to reload every 10 seconds. It's my right, as an American.

The Right to bear arms is for the protection of citizens against a tyrannical Government. It has nothing to do with hunting.
