In WW2 the Samurai code Bushido played a big role. On of the main rules was that surrender was the ultimate disgrace of a soldier. You should rather die "and maintain your honor" than to be captured by the enemy. In addition their emperor (Hirohito) had the status of a God in Japanese society, and you weren't fighting for Japan, you were fighting for the Emperor.

In the battle of the Pacific after Japanese ships had been sunk the allies and the US navy tried to pick up the survivors, but every time they would blow themselves up with a grenade and take 2 or 3 Americans with them. If they didn't have the opportunity to kill Americans they would find a way to kill themselves. So in the end the US decided thay to protect the lives of American men they would just shoot japanese survivors and not take them prisoner out of fear of what they might do.

Many, 90% or more of the Japanese army, were cowards. They relied upon sneak attacks (Pearl harbor), massacreing civilians (Rape of Nanjing), and killing foreign POW's through over working them, starving them, or a combination of both. Also, they would often times wave a white flag to surrender, and then blow themselves up when approached by the arresting party.
