How to get into MARSOC?

I plan on joining the Marines after highschool. If i want to continue with the military, i believe i have what it takes for special operations. Sorry if i sound naive or arrogant. I dont mean to come across that way. I was just wondering about MARSOC. I have some questions:

1. How do you get the opportunity to try out?

2. How is the training compared to SEALs? How long/rigorous?

3. Whats the role of MARSOC? Do they do high value targets like SEALs? What type of missions does MARSOC do?

4. Finally, if you do get into MARSOC, what is the contract? How long are you in for and then do u go back to regular infantry after your contract or are you honorably discharged? And one more thing, i know if you make it thru BUDs you get a $40,000 check. Anything like that for MARSOC?

Thanks in advance!

1- Each Marine Corps base or air station has a MARSOC recruiter. Once you meet the requirements you apply through the MARSOC recruiter.

2- Initial MARSOC training is 9 months. Then you go to specialized training like Combat Diver and HALO/HAHO paratrooper. I doubt if you are going to find anyone who can tell you if it is a hard a BUD/s because no one has gone through both. Either training is extremely difficult. http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2008/10/ap_ma...

3- Yes, they do the same type missions as SEAL's. They also do cultural missions similar to what you see Special Forces doing. Both MARSOC and Special Forces have a broader range of missions than SEAL's. The significant difference MARSOC offers is a Marine MEU of about 2200 Marines backing them up if needed. This was pointed out in a whitepaper which SecDef Rumsfeld asked the Marines to provide.

4- You have to have a couple of years remaining on your contract when you complete training or extend your contract. By the time your make rank and get in you'll need about a minimum of 6 years to complete the contract.

You can ignore what Q said, you have to be a CPL or above to get into MARSOC and they are not phasing out Force Recon. MARSOC and Force Recon have entirely different missions. He got his mistaken idea because MARSOC was filled from Force Recon initially. Force Recon is back to full strength. There are probably more people on here who post misinformation about the Marine Corps, through ignorance or maliciousness, than there are people who can give you solid facts. I don't know why he mentioned MARSOC was the last special ops team to join USSOCOM, which he mistakenly called JSOC. The Marines didn't want to be part of USSOCOM. MARSOC is not part of JSOC and neither is any special ops group. JSOC is more like an advisory board and has people from every branch of service and civilians. They develop tactics, evaluate equipment, etc. http://www.military.com/special-operations/jsoc-jo...

    How To Join Marsoc

One of my buddies talked at length with a Ssgt with 1st MSOB, so I know a little bit about what you're asking

    1. You have to already be in the fleet and when you're ready, work with your command to put together and submit a MARSOC package. They'll look at your PFT, CFT, rifle score, positive and negative marks, any tattoos you have, any languages you speak, whether or not you already have a security clearance, the list goes on and on. If they like what they see in your package (lol) then they'll send you to their indoc training, like selection, their equivalent to BUDs for navy special warfare hopefuls.

    2. I don't know man, I've never heard a very detailed account of that, sorry. Seems pretty secretive.

    3. They're the marines' special operations contribution to JSOC, the last branch to do so. MARSOC is supposed to be phasing out force recon completely if they haven't already. They're a Tier 2 JSOC asset according to that Ssgt I mentioned above. I know they go on a lot of floats in the Pacific and train foreign forces in the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, etc. There are also a lot of them in Afghanistan right now, mostly in the remote northern provinces up in the mountains. Kunar, Nuristan, places like that. Whenever I see them in theater they have full beards and they wear tri-colors to blend in with the local military, who they also train. They do pretty dangerous missions up there. I'd imagine they do HVT ops.

    4. You have to reenlist in order to do it just like any other lat move from one MOS to another. And I've only heard of marines going from infantry or wherever to MARSOC, never the other way around. Maybe if you got physically f**ked up but still wanted to stay in they could put you in another MOS or something but I've never heard of anything like what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure you stay MARSOC till you get out. They got plenty of staff ncos and officers in that field.
