Help! My brand new DVD player will only play CDs?

I just got a new DVD player and it will only play CDs, not DVDs. It's a Slyvania SDVD1602. I've looked at the instruction manual and did what it told me to, but nothing works. Please help!

It was a gift, so I don't have a receipt

    Question: What kind of DVDs are you trying to play on it?

    If you're trying to play some homemade DVD, you have to burn video onto the DVD in the correct format for the DVD player to recognize it.

    Return it for replacement.
