Why won't my Belkin router connect to the Internet?

I just got a new Belkin router a month ago and it was working just fine (after I had to re-install the software) until it magically disconnected from the Internet somehow. After what seemed like 30-60 minutes with tech support and an endless array of unplugging and replugging of my router, computer, and modem, I was told that nothing was wrong with my modem or my router and that my desktop was at fault and didn't explain to me how or why.

Now my Dell Dimension is 7 years old. I still have WinXP (the lady at Belkin tech support said it wasn't an issue). So how do I get my Belkin router to connect to the Internet on my computer? My mom has a Kindle Fire and she needs the WiFi to download books.

Everything was working perfectly fine late in the afternoon until my router lost all connectivity with the Internet. What should I do? Dell tech support will cost me if I try to call them since my computer is out of warranty (and I'm too poor to get a new computer at this point).

Please no sarcastic comments or scams. I just want honest answers (even if the truth hurts).

Update:

The trouble I'm having is with my desktop. I don't have any other device on which to test my router. I did call my ISP and they couldn't do anything.

Update 2:

It is a WiFi router; I had WiFi on it before all of this happened. It's not wireless, either. It has a lot of stuff to plug into the CPU, the wall outlet, and the modem.

i'm sorry, but i'm not an expert on networking, but i'd try connecting to the internet just using your modem. No router or anything. This will determine if your modem and computer are working properly to get onto the internet. If that works, then there may be something wrong with your wireless router. Next check the router. Are there lights on the wireless router? if not, the power supply could be defective. If the lights are on, you should be able to connect the desktop to the router and get on the internet.

If you can connect the desktop which connects directly into the router via a cable, then it may just be a wifi setting. Are you able to get to the settings part of the wifi router? On my lynksys, you have to type 192.168.1.1 in a web browser to get to the settings. Belkin might be different though. They might have a separate program for the settings.

If you have access to the internet through another means (like the library or a friends house, it will surely help figure out the problem through forums, etc).

To be honest there are tons of things that might have gone wrong. If it was working fine one day , try calling your internet provider. I encounter a few times that the internet connection is really down, and it's not router issues. Then check your laptop ipaddress (start->run, type cmd, on the launched terminal, type :ipconfig). Confirm that you have a valid ip. If you don't , try to type : ipconfig /renew. This will try to renew your ipaddress.

The next one to try using other devices to connect to the router. If no other laptop/PC that you can try, you should consider getting a wifi router. Since you mentioned that you need to connect kindle fire through your laptop, I assume you are not using a wifi router. It's much more convenient for your mom to connect direct to the router, without going through your laptop :).

    Good luck!
