why are canadian troops such softies? (no offense)?
this is partly in response to another question, but why is the suicide rate among canadian troops (who are barely doing anything in the war) 42% higher than the US military's, which has been pulling the majority of the weight in the GWOT? in 2012, 1 out of every 8,596 US troops committed suicide (which we consider to be a very high rate), while 1 out of every 5,006 canadian troops did. Is their culture just that softer?
t o- iraq and afghan. perhaps that also attributes to why the canadians (as a percentage of deployed troops) loses 4x as many in combat as the US does. if you go to a place where people are actively seeking to kill you with the intent of "keeping the peace" you're going to get your *** kicked.http://colinkenny.ca/en/Why-are-Canadas-Casualty-R...
kris- have a source for that being the norm or even common with the US military? And I would love to tell you about our vet situation, especially since your belief is wrong. Veterans not only go to college for free, they get paid to go. They are eligeable for housing loans that civilians are not. They recieve free medical care from the VA. If injured or ill as a result of the military they are recieve disability pay. Homeless vets are able to trade in their disability pay (or part of it) for free room and board at several VAs. Such a lovely reputation yo
Such a lovely reputation you canadians have of not knowing what you're talking about.
Kjack- I've yet to see a vet demand respect. Your right, we did choose to put our lives on the line. So do police, firefighters, paramedics, and several other high risk jobs. Also, your argument holds about as much weight as how much oil afghan has... which is 0.
Conrage- gladly.
US suicide numbers in 2012 were at 349
http://www.stripes.com/news/2012-militar%E2%80%A6
US military strength in 2012 was roughly 3 million
Canadian suicide numbers in 2011 (was off by a year, my bad) was at 20
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/sto%E2%80%A6
there are roughly 100,000 canadian troops
http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/pri/first-p%E2%80%A6
I'm sure you can do the math yourself, and you should know that I make sure I can back up anything I claim
needful- I said nothing of respect, and my math is fine... what's up with yours? 20 suicides out of 100,000 troops is 1 suicide per every 5,000 troops. 349 suicides out of 3 million troops is 1 suicide per every 8,596 troops. You may want to take a statistics course, or perhaps basic math.
Bog- actually I did serve, and I did deploy. There goes your whole argument
bradley- my "assumption" is that a candian troop is 42% more likely to commit suicide than a US troop. If it is because they are a softer people was a question, not any sort of conclusion.
a veteran is no longer living a military lifestyle. that's a moot point. is there a difference in what the US and canada consider a suicide to be? If you cant cite it, you have no leg to stand on. I don't know anyone who committed suicide because of combat, and I don't know of anyone who has either. All of the suicides in the military I know about either dealt with things that the military was not a part of or due to the lifestyle.
bradley- if you want to talk about stupid, absurd, and idiotic, then you cant do so while talking down about someones experience... hypocritical much? like I said- none of the ones I know about (either troops I knew or friends of troops I knew) were because of something combat related. And you must have comprehension issues, I never said suicides were not related to service. I actually did mention that a lot of the ones I know of are due to the lifestyle. I never said that ones who did commit suicide for combat related reasons don't deserve to be counted, is the only way you can make an argument by putting words in other peoples mouths?

umm what war? Canada hasn't been in a war for like 50 years.
Afganastan isn't a war it's a peace keeping mission.
America goes to war Canada goes on peace keeping missions. who knows why the suicide rate is higher could just be random statistic. American soldiers had a higher suicide rate in Vietnam then Canadians in any war does that mean anything? maybe it's that canadians dont' enjoy killing foreigners as much as americans?
who knows

Your question is not only offensive, but completely based on uneducated assumptions and a general lack of understanding.
If you had any knowledge of statistics kid, you would know how easy it is to make totally wrong assumptions (like you did), just by crunching raw numbers without any context. You are totally ignoring so many things in your little math equation, such as ignoring veterans who commit suicide (your numbers only include active duty suicides), differences in what types of deaths are reported as suicides, different terms of service, whether the suicides were even by people who were involved in combat, or trends over time.
All your number prove is that 20 Canadian soldiers committed suicide, and 349 Americans did. To jump to assuming that one country has softer soldiers is not only wrong, but shows how little you know.
EDIT: So veterans who commit suicide are not doing so as a result of their service? And don't deserve to be counted? Are you seriously claiming that the epidemic levels of PTSD as a result of both combat and non-combat related service should not be at least examined?
"All of the suicides in the military I know about either dealt with things that the military was not a part of or due to the lifestyle."
What a stupid, absurd comment...I don't even know where to begin on how downright wrong and idiotic this statement is. If this is the kind of logic you are using, I don't want to even waste time arguing with you...

"why are canadian troops such softies? (no offense)?"
The department said 19 men and one woman died by suicide in the Canadian Forces in 2011, up from 12 in 2010.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2012/05...
Suicides are surging among America's troops, averaging nearly one a day this year — the fastest pace in the nation's decade of war. The 154 suicides for active-duty troops in the first 155 days of the year far outdistance the U.S. forces killed in action in Afghanistan

Yes, you suck at math and analogies.
No offense taken, the post certainly is not a reflection of me - you speak of respect while offering precious little; speaks volumes.

You're just a civilian mate, you're dog sh*t, you couldn't survive training in the "soft" HM Canadian Forces if you tried.
You are a civvie with an internet connection. You're no authority on anything military and rate slightly lower on the food chain than a recruit. Why don't you grow a pair and join up if you think you're such a 'ard c*nt.

BQ: Why do people willingly go into the military by their own choice, then demand respect from everyone else who chooses to stay home, go to school and get a career? I understand that their life is on the line.... but hell, THEY chose to put it there. It also bugs me when people say "I fight for our freedom".... when in reality, NOBODY is trying to take your freedom away.... better way to say it is "I fight so that my country can control oil producing countries"...
