Harley Evolution motor question...?

Pulled off the nose cone on my 91 FXR single cam evolution motor because it was starting to whine. The pinion gear has about a quarter of the teeth chewed up, while the cam and breather gears appear to look O.K. Could this happen from the Cam not being shimmed correctly? Or maybe the Cam bearing itself is bad? Just bought the bike about a year ago so don;'t have any of the build information, Other than was told it has a mild cam and ss heads. Any input would be appreciated before pulling the cam, heads etc..UGh Thanks Joe

Kinda hard to say without seeing it but it sounds to me either to be improper shiming or maybe some debris in the nose cone that got involved with the gear.
