As a parent what would you do?

What is a good sport to put my 9 year old son into? He's very uncoordinated. He's a big boy. He's almost 5 feet a little over 100 pounds. My son is in basketball right now. He goes once a week. I find some of the children on the team are unfair to him on and off the court. They're bullying him. They're not team players! (not all the kids.. just a few) So I did try and talk to the program coordinator. She does not care at all and not taking responsibly of the issue. The coach does try. But the kid's parents back their children up. But as a mom. I want to do the right thing. I would like to just walk away and try something new. I don't want my son's feelings hurt. I can see it in his eyes every time I pick him up. But he loves the game so much. But I feel like I'm the bad guy here.

So my question is...

As a parent what would you do?

Update:

I like to thank everyone for the great suggestions ... I have decided to take my son out of Basketball. I have looked into a martial arts program for him and he seems to be very interest. He will be going twice a week.

I should of have mentioned before he does go swimming once a week.

I do agree he does need to start standing up for himself with words..

I am going to look into other programs in a few months..

Thanks again everyone

If he likes the game, and since the parents and administrators aren't willing to resolve the issue, maybe there's another organization he can join. You could also organize a pick up game with his friends. Maybe even you and the other parents could get involved.

A weekly pick up game of kids vs. parents would be a lot of fun, cost nothing and be beneficial physically and emotionally for everyone.

My 9 yr old son is the same height as yours and he used to be very uncoordinated..lol But he would laugh it off and he has always done that on his own. Kids tend to pick with you more if they know you have a weak spot. So get him some books, along with some for yourself with exercises to help build his confidence. The more he tries not to be uncoordinated, the worse it will get. Embracing it allows him to work on it.

He currently plays Lacrosse. There is less room for fumbles and it has helped tremendously with his coordination along with tumbling, martial arts and music, specifically piano and drums. You need a level of coordination to play those.

There are peacocks everywhere. Peacocks are those kids that believe(whether it's true or not) that they are better then the other kids. Their parents are usually to blame for this attitude. The only way to silence them is to be better then they are. Ask him what he wants to do keeping in mind. That this is the way it works on many of the teams and in the sports world. Some places have two different teams, rec and competitive. Look into the rec programs if you have any of those.

The kid needs to learn to fight his own battles.

Put him in soccer, or wrestling. Once a week is not enough..

Get him a bike or something.

It's your fault he's overweight and kids are making fun of him.

he needs to learn how to stand up for himself. teach him to defend himself. if you don't you'll cripple him for life.

try another sport. he fits the profile for football or hockey. peewee football or mini-mite hockey are excellent sports and do not involve all that much contact.
