Can you wear bracelets during surgery?
I'm having my tonsils removed. I have a bunch of bracelets on both my arms, most of them are ones that I can't take off, since they are tied. I've heard they don't allow you to wear jewelry during surgery, but these don't have any metal in them, they're just string and some are rubber (but I can take those off). Can I wear them?
I didn't add this earlier, but I used to cut my wrists and no one knows. I hide them with the bracelets and I don't want anyone to see. If they do make me take them off, will the doctor ask questions? And will my mom be allowed into the room before I wake up and have time to cover them?

All jewelry, yes ALL must be removed simply because.....Hospital protocol and to include the operating room. Patient safety, in the event of edema/swelling and whatever else and yes, nail polish is forbidden, because, any nail colour changes, the doctor is unable to clearly see your NATURAL COLOUR. Metal or otherwise, protocol is protocol.....You enter the operating room with....Hospital gown and hospital booties & identification, name band, that's it !! best wishes. **PS** From the operating room one goes to the RECOVERY ROOM, depending on each hospitals protocol, yes/no for parent entry. On your day of ADMISSION, ASK/INQUIRE as to the PROTOCOL for your hospital. Yes, once admitted, you will be assigned your room/bed, and that point the nurse enters the picture, asking pertinent questions, and doing an OVERALL ASSESSMENT OF YOUR PERSON AND DOCUMENTATION OCCURS AT THIS POINT. After her assessment, then enters the physician thatt will be doing the ANAESTHETIC, and his line of questions. A heart test, called an ECG might be ordered. So, as you see a few medical professionals enter the scenario. While in the admitting dept, you/mother/parent, SIGNS ON THE DOTTED LINE, FULL MEANING...ALLOWING FOR ALL TESTS/PROCEDURE TO BE CARRIED OUT, IF DEEMED. Fully informed now, so ASK ON YOUR ADMITTING DATE. Also, blood work WILL be in order to determine your WBC/White bloood Count, to ascertain your level of infection if any and your hemoglobin/level of circulating blood already in your system. Hope this helps.
