Wood stove pouring out smoke?

I have used my wood stove since the beginning of winter without any problems. However when I went to start it this morning smoke just poured into my room. I cleaned out the ash yesterday, so that can't be the problem. The chimney was cleaned back in April of 2012. And the dapper is open all the way, but yet every time I go to start it today I get a room full of smoke. Does anyone know whats going on or what I could look at being wrong with it.

go clean the chimney again! Creosote buildup will smoke like crazy if you are burning soft wood!

Unless you are burning a lot of green wood or pine, it shouldn't be a dirty chimney problem yet. Sometimes on very cold or windy days, it's a little hard to get an up draft started. It requires heat to get going. I would try using starter logs. The small ones. Light the starter log with some kindling wood, close the door, make sure the draft is wide open and the damper about half way open. After the fire starts good open the damper all of the way.

You will have to clean your chimney: Heating of the chimney makes the creosote stick then it lets

go when it cools. It builds up gradually so you aren't aware of it happening, but it will fill the pipe at any point where there is an elbow. Call a chimney cleaner if you are unfamiliar with doing it yourself. Even burning only totally dry wood doesn't stop the build up from happening.

Do you have a spark arrester on the chimney? They can get clogged up and mimic a blocked chimney. And it's called a damper, not a dapper.

Sometimes it's hard to get an updraft started ,like if it's a damp day. Try burning some papers and crack open a window in the room until the chimmney warms up ,then add some wood to it while its burning.
