How to trim a dog's nails?

My daughter left me a dog. Through neglect, hers then mine, the dog's nails have grown really long. I attempted to trim them but the dog won't let me touch them and growls and snaps. Incidentally, the dog is totally blind. I am on a tight budget. Suggestions?

Update:

Also the dog, aged 12, is diabetic and insulin dependent.

You can take him into a groomer, places like Petsmart and Petco will trim his nails for $5 or will dremel his nails for $10.After that, start handling his paws and toenails more, give him praise or even a treat when he sits still and doesn't fuss about having them touched,it will take awhile but hopefully in the next few months you will be able to trim his nails at home. While at the groomer ask them how to properly cut nails, when you do finally get him to the point of being able to trim his nails at home be sure to have a styptic powder available or something like cornstarch or flour on hand just in case the quick does get nicked.Good luck, and best wishes!

Should not have taken in a dog if you cannot afford basic health care for your dog. You can either purchase a Dremel, or take the poor thing to Petco/PetSmart. I believe that they charge around $10.00 for a nail trim. You could also take the poor thing to a professional groomer. Since this dog is diabetic, you would be seeing a vet, on a regular basis. This vet can trim your dog's nails.

Some dogs just hate having their nails clipped all mine do. Most groomers do not charge much for a nail trim. Mine is $7. If the nails of the dog are pale it is easy to see the quic (sorry cant spell) of the nails it will be a redish color cut below that. If you cut it the dog will bleed and be hurt. If the nails are dark it is a lot harder to cut and to me is a guessing game. If the nails are black, the dog doesnt like them trimed, and you are inexperienced doing it. I would seek a groomer

I'm a dog groomer and honestly with the problems that older dogs have it can be really dangerous to attempt to cut there nails your self. I recommend that you take it to a groomer to do I work for petco and it runs between 7-10 dollars. If thats not an option I'll include a link to a video on how to do it properly yourself without hurting your dog. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=Bqc4OW_Iz9A&desktop... . Now if you choose to do it yourself it will probably take two people and you will need a muzzle. I will also include how to make a simple muzzle at home. http://www.ehow.com/how_4965384_make-homemade-dog-...

A groomer really shouldn't charge too much... I go to one rather than trust myself. Or if he is due for a vet appointment, the vet can do it for free or super cheap (mine charges a dollar).

Are the nails black, or pale? If they are pale, you can see the "quick" and cut them more safely. Don't cut the quick!
