Winding noise when clutch not pressed?

2000 VW Gti

1.8t 4cyl

My gti makes a winding sort of noise when i am not pressing the clutch. When i press the clutch it goes away. Although it makes a similar noise if the car is moving even if the clutch is not pressed.

What could this be caused by?

Could be a carrier bearing going out from somebody riding the clutch or just holding it in a little bit the entire time driving, try pressing it down slowly, if the noise stops before the clutch is engaged then that is probably the problem and probably where the clutch was constantly held by the driver and holding it in that spot should always stop the noise if you are driving or just idling

Check the fluid level in the transmission.
