Buying a Mosin-Nagant, scope question?
So I grew tired of Big 5 not getting any normal Mosins and have decided to get the one 'Sniper model' that they have. I've one question, though: how do I tell if the scope's legit? What sorta numbers should I be looking for.
Or am I just being a paranoid idiot and should I not worry about it?

big 5 has them legit, but their prices are ridiculous. $229 for a 91/30? $899 for a scoped Mosin? what planet are they from where 91/30's are $229?
there's no specific serials to look for, those soviets didn't upgrade as neatly as us Americans. they use grabbed any random rifle in excellent condition, put a scope on it and set it out for their snipers to use.
it's difficult ot determine unless you know Mosins well. you're gonna be checking the receiver for additional drilling holes, the authenticity of hte mount, scope, and determine is the rifle is indeed ww2 used.
well at the very least, it shouldn't be in brand new condition, if it is then the serials shouldn't match and there should be pitting in the grooves near the muzzle or it's counterbored.
it's extremely unlikely you'll find a brand new un issued Mosin 91/30 sniper.
and Big 5 is not a big seller of them... they seem to get hte bottom of barrel stuff. the good stuff is skimmed off by real gun stores, like Classic Arms or J&G. Big 5 just gets the generics, that they claim to be "historic" and "collectible" but really isn't. well not as collectible as they claim it is.

You really can`t. I have a reproduction that was supposed to be made at the same factory as the WWII originals. Serial numbers and stamped PU mounts are a little more comforting, but finding a real model rifle that was produced especially for Russian snipers is even harder than ever finding an authentic scope and mount. I just try not to tie a bunch of money into either.

If its the original scope for the rifle, it should have the same serial number as the rifle on it. I built a Mosin Nagant carbine, for my own use that had the original scope still on it. I would , however recommend, replacing the original scope as I did, as the old 1 isn't much use for todays type shooting, and you;'ll be much happier, and better prepared to use it with an updated optics.

Most Mosin Nagant snipers with scopes were probably not sniper rifles and probably reproduction scopes. The should be able to tell you honestly, but I suspect that the markings on the scope will make it clear enough.

Many of the scopes actually are original WWII-era scopes. Now whether that rifle was actually used with a scope originally is a different matter.
Unfortunately, they are so good at faking PU snipers that there is no definitive way to tell.
I've heard that there are more "genuine German K98 snipers" here in the US than the German Wehrmacht ever deployed.
