Theists: Why do you insist on trying to call atheism a religion?

A religion in your view is a good thing isn't it? Yet I hear many (not all) theists attempting to do anything they can to claim that atheism is somehow a religion as well, often times using it as though it's an insult or removes credibility.

Does this mean that you guys actually realize that religion is silly and that's why you try to pin that same label on atheists? Or are you just confused?

Update:

@Peter: Then you're using an incorrect definition, sorry. Just look at the word: atheist. a-theist. Meaning not a theist.

Update 2:

On second thought, make that @Peter be directed to everyone who is either ignorant of the English language or feels like lying to try and avoid the question anyway.

Update 3:

@Shibolet: Funny, I own a copy of that book. Mine doesn't say anything like that.

Maybe you have the special "Pinocchio edition"?

they want to bring us down to their level

they think by pretending that we have faith, it somehow makes their faith look less ridiculous

I'm a Christian but I think what we call "religion" is just silliness. I read the Bible and believe in God but don't get caught up in the rites and regulations and the holier than thou orthodoxy. Showing kindness and love is better than any dogma. I personally have nothing against atheists, as long as they aren't too insulting of me for being a Christian. Many are quite nice and intelligent. Whether or not you guys are called a religion is completely irrelevant, as that term has lost any credibility and is more of a sociopolitical label anyway.

"Religion is an organized collection of belief systems, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values."

    noun

1.a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

(especially when, not exclusively, They believe there is no purpose of the universe ... it's still belief)

2.a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.

(Atheists have a set of beliefs - no gods, no creation, no theistic stuff. Theistic doctrines are not provable and neither are atheistic beliefs ... the universe poofed into existence because a particle hit another particle but no one knows how or why)

3.the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.

(Organisations like FFRF who's main goals where quite successfully overshadowed by their fundamentalists and now they seek a world order of no religion ... there are others, but I can't remember which)

    Here's some food for thought:

"In Britain, where the Church of England is a laughing stock lately, the percentage of Britons professing no faith has nearly doubled in the last decade — which might explain the rise of an atheist church." (parody or not ... it sits in line with what the Federal courts ruling)

It is not far fetched to view atheism as a religion. Personally I don't give a **** :)

I do however agree with Simple Jack.

Yes, it's really funny. The worst the theists can come with is that one or the other scientific theory is "religion" and the worst for atheism is the "atheist religion". Self loathing theists?

    Just presenting the facts.

Why do you fundy atheists run from logic and reason when presented with facts?

For example, you suggesting the definiton of religion is tied to the belief in a diety. Simply that is ignorant. There are well established religions such as Buddhism that are atheistic.

Further, in the US there are Federal Court rulings that atheism is a religion. So, from a purely legal sense, Atheism is a Religion in the US.

It is beyond their comprehension, that a state of mind can be achieved, which does not require the same delusional crutches, upon which they themselves rely.

As a one eyed man, could not easily appreciate the perception of depth, which a two eyed person experiences.

    Why not?

Atheism is defined in the contemporary western sense: not just the lack of belief in a god, but the assertion about the non-existence of any gods, spirits, or divine or supernatural beings.

Atheists in this sense are metaphysical naturalists, and as will be shown, they DO follow a religion.

Because they fail to include religions such as Confucianism and Taoism which focus almost exclusively on how adherents should live, and the little they do say about supernatural issues such as the existence of an afterlife is very vague.

Atheism requires “faith” (using their own definition) that the laws of chemistry, physics and biology were once violated and life arose from non-life via chemical evolution.

Federal courts say it is. http://www.wnd.com/2005/08/31895/

Maybe atheists are just hypocritical - it is not a religion when it suits them, it is a religion when it suits them..

Because of their paranoia about the "divine" myth of the big bang.

Source(s): Carl Sagan in his book "Cosmos" page 285 for his reference to the big bang as "our modern myth."
