I just read a book called 'The Fault in our Stars' by John Green. Its now my all time favorite.
Its an amaizing story, I give it 12/10 stars ! Its a really sad book and its definitely worth reading! :D
Description:
Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.
Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.
Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind
Before I die - Jenny Downham (Movie adaptation is called 'Now is Good')
This was my favorite book before I read The Fault in our start.
Description:
Tessa has just months to live. Fighting back against hospital visits, endless tests, drugs with excruciating side-effects, Tessa compiles a list. It’s her To Do Before I Die list. And number one is Sex. Released from the constraints of ‘normal’ life, Tessa tastes new experiences to make her feel alive while her failing body struggles to keep up. Tessa’s feelings, her relationships with her father and brother, her estranged mother, her best friend, and her new boyfriend, all are painfully crystallised in the precious weeks before Tessa’s time finally runs out
The third book that I reccommend it 'The Sky Is Everywhere' by Jandy Nelson. First of all, the book itself is gorgeous. The pages are a different material/colour from normal books and the text is in a dark navy blue (in my copy at least). This was one of the first 'sad' books that I read and I loved it som much I must have read it at least 3 times in the space of 2 weeks.
Description:
Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to centre stage of her own life - and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey's boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie's own. Joe is the new boy in town, with a nearly magical grin. One boy takes Lennie out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it. But the two can't collide without Lennie's world exploding..
I hope that I helped you find the 'perfect book'. Once again I HIGHLY recommend that you read the fault in our stars first. From what you specified I think you will like that one the most <3
Your friend will be very impressed if you read it and then get her to read it, I can guarantee it.

Um, you sound like you might enjoy Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. It's a bit sad, and aimed toward your age group.
There's also Empress of the World, by Sara Ryan. I read it, and it just seems to pull at your heartstrings the whole way through. You really want to just cry by the end of the book; it's an amazing read. However, it's a story about two teenage girls falling in love with each other, which I'm not sure you mind. You definitely should check it out.

Can't go wrong with Romeo and Juliet, sounds old and stupid but the ending literally punched me in the face and I never get emotional about anything cuz I'm a serious guy
