Is almond good for health?

From what I read on wikipedia, they contain a lot of omega 6 fats, which is already abundant in modern diet and may increase inflammation and risk of getting cardiovascular disease.

But I also read that they have hypotensive effect and proven to lower bad LDL cholesterol.

Isn't that contradictory?

Almonds contain mono unsaturated fats (like olive oil) and apart from all the vitamins and minerals, they’re high in protein and fibre, and rate a zero in cholesterol. They containing essential omega-3 fatty acids and they have a favourable ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids.

They also contain important nutrients such as magnesium and phosphorus and bio active phytosterol components making them a valuable inclusion in a healthy balanced diet.

Numerous studies have been conducted into the amount of almonds (and other nuts) consumed per day - from the RDI being 30gm or (equivalent to a handful) up to 100gm per day (almonds only). Due to satiety (feeling of fullness) levels after eating almonds participants are less likely to also snack on sugary/salty snacks that may cause weight gain.

What’s in 30 grams (handful) of almonds?

    • 758kj (the energy of 2 pieces of fruit)

    • 6 grams of protein (the protein of one egg)

    • 15 grams of unsaturated fat (15ml of extra-virgin olive oil)

    • 1 gram of saturated fat

    • 2.6 grams of fibre (2 slices of mixed grain bread)

    • 71 mg of Calcium (60 ml of milk)

Almonds are a great snack option full of protein and of course the Omega Fats they are also very rich ion antioxidants and have a very delicious flavor that can be added to salads, trail mixes, covered with chocolate or just eaten on their own and yes many nuts can help with lowering cholesterol.

Just remember not all nuts are nuts like peanuts for instance are legumes.

Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats as are found in olive oil, which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. I try to consume about a handful of almonds a day to counteract the poison from my 3 packs a day smoking habit. :)

Almond like many nuts contain omega 6 fats but they have a lot of positive things like minerals and antioxidants. Almond in particular is rich with magnesium which is especially good for nervous system.

If you eat nuts in small amounts I believe that it will have more positive than negative effects.

It's not BAD for you, but too much can be because they are so high in fat. I used to rely on almonds to fill me up, especially when I started doing a mostly raw diet, but it never made me feel any better. Just bloated and gross..

Don't rely on then to make your health better, we mess up and it does not happen. Use them to help in making your diet healthier
