It is April 15, 1864 and you have just received news of President Lincoln’s death.?

What feelings would you have about the death of the President and why would someone want to impose those feelings on a Nation?

If Lincoln had died in 1864, rather than in 1865, I think I'd be getting ready to accept the Confederate States of America as a fact of life.

I'd be appalled - the Civil War was still ongoing April 1864,and as that was an election year,a negotiated peace and the CSA as an independent, sovereign state would look very likely.Political expediency by the likes of Andrew Johnson would have seen to that.

On the other hand if I was living in the CSA,I'd be ecstatic - with the enemy leader dead, and his successor Vice President Hamlin a political nonentity, the Union war effort was bound to stall until at least early 1865,when the winner of the 1864 election would take office.
