What does it mean to "hit rock bottom"?

What happens to a person who has hit rock bottom? Do they die or something? Or is it just being broke?

You need to envision the lake, pit, ocean or whatever metaphor you'd like that has a point, after sinking or falling into, where you can't go any lower because you "hit rock bottom".

If someone's life has a series of bad or unfortunate events that cause the person to get more and more discouraged about a positive outcome, there comes a time when that person will ask themselves, "What else could possibly go wrong?" or "I don't know how much more of this I can take."

Then, after you "hit rock bottom", things don't necessarily start getting better, they just can't get any worse. Literally, the only direction to go after hitting rock bottom, is up. So, when you hear this response to the question "How's it going?"..."Things are looking up." You can surmise that they are returning from "rock bottom".

Bag it doesn't mean to die or anything. It can be use in differ things, but pretty much it means you've reached the end or the limit in a bad way. Like if I was broke I would hit rock bottom as you said.

To reach the ultimate lowly state. In can be used in many contexts - mental health, finance, health in general. But rock bottom generally implies that things have gotten so bad that they truly cannot get any worse.

It means you go so low, that there's no way to go any lower. It can be used in many ways, including financially, if you are bankrupt, or emotionally, where like, you feel so bad that there isn't any worse place to go and the only way is up.

To reach your lowest point; a point where you have fallen so far you feel like you can't get back up (figuratively). it is pretty sucky :(
