What GM 3800 engine has the maximum horsepower?
I own a 1991 Buick Reatta which came with a 3800 engine as standard equipment, rated @ 170 hp.
What I would like to know is if I were to make an engine swap, what make/model vehicle would I want to take the replacement 3800 engine from, inasmuch as my goal is to put maximum power under the hood?
In other words, I want a no-hassle installation of a 3800 engine to replace the 3800 in my Reatta, but I want a replacement engine from another GM product that puts out considerably more power than the 3800 in my Reatta.

You are just out of luck. There is nothing that is no hassle that makes considerably more power than the engine you have unless you consider 25 considerable. And to get that you will have to change almost all the electronics which does not come under "no hassle". You will have to change your parameters.

Find one of the supercharged 3800's. The no hassle part is going to be the trick. The supercharged ones used different computers and sensors so you would also have to transfer all that stuff over. I also think in the 96 range the made some changes to the mounts as well as the electronics so that would further complicate things. The series 2 non supercharged engines were rated just over 200. The series 1 supercharged were rated in the low 200's. The series 2's and 3's were in the upper 200's. It really depends on your skills and money.

Not sure how much work it would take but the 3800 had two different series's after they produced the one in your car.
3800 Series II or L36
3800 Series II supercharged or L67
3800 Series III or L26
3800 Series III supercharged or L32
Like I said I'm not sure how much work it would take for your car to be able to use a newer engine. I know the series 2 and series 3 motors both had more horsepower than the first 3800.

First, look for the Generation II 3800 engine.
Next, look for the Generation II Supercharged 3800 engines common on the 2000-2005 Buick Regal GS and the Supercharged Buick Rivieras of roughly the same years. The supercharger units offer only a minumum of increased maintenance, and they are screamers on the road while still offering decent highway mileage.
If you are switching them out, make sure you install the new computer command unit too.
Source(s): If you recall the Buick Regal GS-X of the mid-'80's, they were the 3.8 liter engines also. - Anonymous7 years ago
