    Possible causes:

The fixing screw has backed out. It happens. Pop the center cap out of the handle and tighten the screw down. Don't go crazy with it, just tighten it.

The handle's knurling is stripped and worn away. If your handle has been getting worse for a while, this may have happened in addition to the screw backing out, so check for that. If the splines inside the handle are worn down, replace the handle.

The spines on the valve stem are worn away. This can happen along with wearing down the splines in the handle, so inspect everything. If the stem's splines are worn down, you need to replace the stem. But it isn't hard. Turn off water below the sink, remove the handle, remove the packing nut, remove the bonnet nut, remove the stem. The stem winds out of the faucet in the same direction as when you try to turn the water on.

Also check the condition of the washer. If you've worn out the handle by cranking on the handle to close off a nagging drip, the washer might be the actual root of all your trouble. Also check the condition of the valve seat inside the faucet. Just shine a flashlight down in there and be sure that raised ring at the bottom doesn't have any nicks or worn spots. If none, no worries. If there are, buy a cheap one-size-fits-all seat wrench to remove it.

Take all the old parts, along with the manufacturer's name, to Home Depot or Lowe's or your favorite plumbing supplier and replace with new. Everything goes back together in reverse order of removal.

Job's done. Congrats, you just saved yourself the outlandish $75 "service fee" that plumbers charge just to park their truck in your driveway.

If it was just a case of the handle being loose ,the handle would be flopping around like it wasn't even

attached,,most likely is the handle stop broken offf and depending on the model it could be part of the handle or part of the stem

The handle is just lose. That's why it is spinning. Look for a screw of some type on the lower part of the handle. I think you will find it just needs to be tightened.
