Does your insurance company cover complementary/alternative therapies?

I'm wondering what private health insurance companies offer coverage for complementary/alternative medicine (CAM), like massage and biofeedback. Does your insurance cover CAM? What therapies are covered, and do you need special referrals or approvals to qualify? Are your insurance rates halfway decent?

Thanks!

It depends on the company, but my insurance does cover some forms of CAM. So far, the only one I've used is Chiropractic (which as saved me a LOT of pain and has allowed me to practice Tae Kwon Do without having to stop as I thought I would have to), but I've heard of some that will cover certain treatments of Acupuncture or massage (most commonly treat pain or other things that have been proven for treatment instead of just "what the practitioners claim"). The biggest thing if you're shopping around is to ask for a list of what the health insurance covers or if it specifically covers the treatments that you want to get. Good luck and I hope I helped!

  • I got Anthem and all they cover is chiropractice. My chiropractiobner told me that United also covers alternative medicine---you know, you got to look at the copay and increase in premium to decide if it is worth it. I do not really believe that it would be worth it because they pay for the visit and as I heard they do NOT pay for the prescriptions. So, if you end up having to pay a higher premium and hi9gher decuctible and the supplements you are prescribed, then it is not worth having that kind of insurance.

Alternative medicine should be part of conventional medicine---drugs should be the last line of defense....

Many cover naturopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture. Each insurance company has its own guidelines about whether or not you need a referral by an MD.

The insurance that is available to you is going to vary by state, and how much you are willing to pay.
