Just Curious, if I got a horse what would I do with it if a tornado came through my area?
I been wondering this for a long time. Some people just put their horses in the barn and hope for the best. In the old days (like in Wizard of Oz) people would release their horses and run for shelter. What do you do to keep your horse safe with a tornado warning now? When you have a dream of owning a horse this is one of the main concerns when you live in tornado valley.

In my opinion the best thing to do is turn the horse loose. That way he has a much better chance of surviving than if he were confined...the barn/shelter could collapse on him, or if he were in a pen or field the fencing could severely hurt him if it blew apart. If he is loose he can at least run for safety.
If tornadoes are prevalent in your area, buy a leather or breakaway halter, put duct tape on the cheekpiece and write your name/address/phone number on it so if you have to turn him loose and somebody finds him he can be returned to you more easily.

in the old days, really?
lol
people still do that. they set their horses free in their pastures.
unless you have built some kind of concrete bunker for your horse, there's really not a lot you can do.
a barn can be very dangerous or safe. depends on the barn.
it's basically a chance you take with your horse's life when you decide to live in a tornado area. maybe he'll live through it, maybe he won't.
I don't live in a tornado area. I did once, but I got freaked out and moved asap before anything bad could happen. I'd never want to live where tornadoes happen. good luck with that crap.

People still do this. If there are tornado warning, use spray paint/horse-safe paint and write your address and phone number on the horse, then let it go in a big open pasture. You can also braid tags into your horse's mane, so if anyone finds it missing they know who to contact.
Rather let the horse run free and be able to avoid flying debris, than trapped in a collapsable stable with nowhere to go.

i know big aqha and training barns have underground shelters with well lit ramps below ground. usually they just have id tags on the halters, stone buildings and if possible, let them loose. but tornadoes are unpredictable...
