I always correct people. Is something wrong?

This is going to make me sound like a huge braggart, but I am an incredible intelligent human being. I have a wealth of knowledge on many subjects, and my intellect surpasses most of my fellow classmates (grade 11) by far.

That established, I have a problem with correcting people. Whenever I hear incorrect information being exchanged, I spontaneously correct it, often in a condescending or pretentious way. I am in fact a very nice person, and I am normally rather calm and chill, but I sound like a jerk when I constantly tell others that they are wrong.

I feel like other people grow tired of my corrections and think I am trying to show off my smarts.

This is not the case. In fact, I make a conscious effort to not speak when I here someone saying something wrong, but it feels strange somehow.

The best way I can describe it is like an itch. When someone says something wrong, eg: saying "nucular" instead of "nuclear," I feel like something has to be said about it, or else this bad feeling lingers in my brain.

I don't think I am doing this because my brain thinks it is its responsibility to prevent the spread from misinformation, so I seriously think I might have some sort of social disorder, which is strange because I am a very sociable person.

So to any psychologists out there: Is there a disorder that could explain what I am feeling? Or have I just developed a bad habit that I need to break? Is there anything I can do for it?

    Hi there,

I am not an expert, but it is very possible you are undiagnosed. To me, it sounds like one of the symptoms of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). You'd have to read up on OCD because if you do have it, it won't be isolated to just this one example. However, you might do a bunch of other things you don't realize and the OCD may make sense of all of it. Sounds totally like it, though (my son has OCD). Best of luck.
