Is bringing a gun into a national forest okay?

We're going backpacking in Olympic National Forest tomorrow on a three-day trip and I'd wanted to bring my rifle (mosin-nagant) with. My dad's pretty against it as he's convinced somebody's going to call the police or freak out in some other way.

I know it's completely legal, my question is -- do you think it's a good idea?

It is completely legal to open carry loaded firearms in the lawful pursuit of game in the Olympic national forest. Have your hunting license in possession and state that you are hunting coyote it is a year round game animal.. However should you cross into the Olympic National Park firearms are restricted to those that have a concealed carry weapon and permit only, your rifle would not qualify.

National Forests are multi-use areas for the public. While Washington State game laws apply and state wardens have jurisdiction over hunting crimes, you can generally shoot targets and hunt for game in most areas. Restrictions apply for shooting firearms across trails and roads or near developed areas where a stray load could endanger people. Inquire with the District Ranger Office nearest the area in which you have an interest and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

You can carry in any National Forest Or Park. As long as you have the

proper license. Your first poster gave you the best information.

The terrain is pretty steep and that's a heavy rifle.

You don't need it, so must ask yourself why you want to bring it.
