Why doesn't my speedometer or odometer work?
Hello, my name is Anthony. Recently acquired a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder X.E. My speedometer doesn't work all that well. It seems to only work during cold conditions, like from a cold start. Once the truck warms up, which take about 5 minutes give or take. it stops working. If I drive long enough, it goes all the way to the end (100mph) resets, and works for a little while, and then resumes to not working at all. I have to rely on my GPS to give me accurate speeds. When I bought the truck, it was acting up. The odometer reads 175k, but because of this issue, I am not sure of the true mileage. Anyways. For all savvy mechanics, I would appreciate your help. What's broken and where can I get parts for a good price? Thanks in advance!

This is a common issue, you have a loose solider joint on the "Combination Meter" (Speedometer) circuit board, it is a resistance connection, so that is why it is affected by temperature and vibration.
NOTE: You can send the Combination Meter off to an electronics shop in your area, and have it repaired.

Speedo is electronic and the next test is to scan the computer OBD-II for speed sensor related faults, if present then the sensor on the transaxle is the likely culprit, if no codes are present then I would suspect the Speedometer\Odometer module on the dash is the problem.

seems to me like you may have a connection in the back that has simply fallen out. when it rests for a while it could slip back in place. then when it starts to get warmer and looser and the car starts to move it slips out again. ive seen it happen before on other parts of the car. another thing could be a faulty and dead cluster. simple fix is to go to the wreckers and buy a new one.
