Do you actually need alkaline batteries in Flashlights?

Or would heavy Duty be better?

There is no real need for Heavy Duty or basic carbon/zinc batteries, except to be ultra cheap.

Alkalines are cheap enough to buy and use them almost exclusively.

If you want to rely on a light being available, use Alkaline, or if possible, Lithium

If you use flash lights quite frequently, you may consider NiMH rechargeables for their ongoing value.

Really, neither are good for modern flashlights. Lithium is the superior battery, if the flashlight can handle them. Some can't tolerate the higher constant voltage. NIMH are also great for flashlights.
