Can a teen get the lap band or gastric bypass?

Can a teen (15) with diabetes and 50 lbs over weight get the lap band or gastric bypass surgeries? And what, are the pros and cons of it?

Gastric sleeve is better than a bypass. It leaves enough of your stomach that you do not need to take extra vitamins. You can get anything with money. They do it in Mexico pretty cheap and all you need is a parent's signature. Believe it or not, some of the very best Drs in bariatrics practice over the border.

The cons of lap band is that it doesn't work for a lot of people. It also slips and has to be removed.

The cons of gastric bypass is that after a few years, some gain their weight back and stretch out the intestine. Many patients going in for diet counseling are people who have gained their weight back after GBPS

You have to be morbidly obese, and have your underlying health problem. That is usually considered to be 100 lbs or more. you also have to prove that you have failed with diets and exercise.

Pro's are that it may help you control your disease if you make permanent changes in your food intake and what you eat. It has been proven however, that the majority of people who have gastric bypass, will regain the weight again, in a few years.

Con's are that you can die from either surgery, or from the anesthetic. Lap band's can slip and have to be surgically removed. ( a cousin had that happen). Some people develop dumping syndrome where as soon as they eat, they have to move their bowels, vomiting, pain, weakness in the abdominal wall resulting in further surgery or hernias.

Gastric Bypass often has complications and several other operations have now been developed to decrease the morbidity. (complications)

Im guessing it probably has to be extreme circumstances and need parents consent. Call your family dr. to get a correct answer

It would most likely be indadvisable as you are still growing.

Also, it would probably be safer to just watch what your eating and when your eating/exercising in relation to your condition.
