Can someone define for me exactly what "the middle class" is?
I get the feeling that a lot of us THINK we are part of the middle class when in fact we fall below or above the line.

I have searched all over the internet for that and cannot get an answer. They give a single person ranges of over 50k and family of 4 over 50k. There does not appear to be a defined answer.

Not sure anymore. Middle class seems to be a 60k household with children and a mortgage. Doesn't feel like a single person with no kids can be deemed middle class anymore cause we get screwed worse than anyone paying any type of taxes by percentage. The working class are judged by lifestyle. If you have a job and property its better to have a kid to claim.
Guess that's capitalisms dark side. The more children you have the more you spend and invest in junk. The more they get rich. Make sure to turn in your "unwanted gold" for green bills so you can buy Christmas presents this year for your children. Living in a world where televisions are worth more than your stock in gold.

In 2010 the median income was about $50K. Median means right in the middle.
Middle class falls between $25,000 to $110,000 for singles $50K to $250K for married people. If you have 2 people with college degrees each making $60K, that is $120K in income.
If you live in New York City, $120K is barely enough to live on and income is higher in these areas. In Ohio, $120K is a good living because you can buy a house starting at $100K.
So the middle class income number floats depending on where you live. Wikipedia has some good info on it but I am not sure how accurate it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_t...

well, like most things, most people think they are in that "desired area"... we all think we're the smartest and best... lol... but we call can't be the best...
but the definitions often vary person to person... usually focusing on the group that the person happens to be a part of...
just me... I think a good way is to start out in the middle... the median income... which is about 50k for a family, maybe a little less...
for a family of four, you can get food stamps if you make up to $30k for a household...
so, how about $30k (may be a little low, but it's something) to $50k on the low end...
and how about double the median to $100k on the high end? twice as much as the median... that may even be a little high...
now... of course, you would probably need to adjust these for costs of living in cities, maybe even doubling them in expensive cities... but just saying overall...
but I don't think there is an official definition...

Many so-called poor people in America are fat, so the definitions are fairly ludicrous.
