HP LaserJet 1200 is printing symbols. What do I do?

Hello all. I have an HP LaserJet 1200 hooked up directly to my computer via USB. Whenever I print and leave my computer alone, everything works fine. However, when I use another application or program, my printer starts printing out symbols all over the page. Two of my colleagues are having the same problem; what could be causing this?

    Install the updated driver for your specific operating system.
