If i start running on a restricted diet will I gain weight?

I know it sounds a bit silly, but let me clarify. I heard that when you diet and exercise sometimes your body goes into starvation mode. But, with dieting alone I have hit a plateau and want to push through it by adding exercise, will this cause me to gain weight if i do so?

Thanks!

    You're absolutely right - it's silly...

Any and every athlete out there that performs at a high level lives to a strict diet and workout plan. There bodies do not go into "starvation mode" - they simply live a healthy lifestyle.

So no, your body won't go into starvation mode, and you won't gain weight.

However, it is important to note that a good healthy diet will determine how your body reacts to the exercise you do on a daily basis. If you don't get in the right nutrients and vitamins it very well could hurt your body.

When done properly one of the best diets you can go on is the Paleo diet. It's all natural and very rich in essential (natural) nutrients your body needs to perform everyday.

I use this for myself, my wife, and my kids - not to mention for my fighters at my gym.

That is not completely true. Your body goes into starvation mode when you don't give it the right amount of calories. When in starvation mode your body will retain calories and wont burn them off nearly as quickly even if you exercise. The best way to prevent your body from going into starvation mode is to spread your meals out over the course of the day. It is recommended to eat 5 SMALL meals a day instead of 3 normal meals. For example, I eat a bowl of cereal in the morning when I wake up at 6:00, a special K bar around 9:00, an apple around 12:00 a sandwich around 2:00, veggies and rice around 5:00, and chicken or something around 8:00. If you feel hungry EAT. When you are hungry your body is already in starvation mode. The same goes with drinking, when you are thirsty your body is already dehydrated. You may think that if you don't eat you will lose weight but that is not true. You will actually burn more calories if you eat something small and healthy than if you just starve all day.
