Why is wine sold in volumes of 750 mL?

I have noticed that bottles of wine are sold in 750 mL bottles. I was wondering why they aren't sold in a full liter. The only thing I can figure is it is based off some traditional pre Metric units and it is approximately 750 mL.

It is probably similar in measurement to a fifth which is/was a common measurement for hard liquor. It refers to a fifth of a gallon, which of course would be less than a quart, which is a fourth of a gallon.

It is kind of like...a two liter bottle of soda is roughly a half gallon. When bottlers are packaging their products, it helps if it is easily recognized by anyone no matter what system of measurement they use. Most everyone in the world is on the metric system but we Americans love our quarts and gallons.
