Where's the best place to rise bread in a cold flat?

I'm trying to make my own break (no breadmaker) but my flat is really cold so it's taking an age to rise. What can I do to make it rise quicker? Where can I find the warmest spot in my flat?

There's no central heating so I can't pop it in front of the heater.

Place in oven or similar enclosure with heating pad or lightbulb aim for body temp in air and cover with moist cloth after turning dough in a greased bowl to coat.

Pop the oven on for just a few minutes and let it get nice and warm. You can also set the bowl on top of a heating pad. I've never tried it, but I've heard it works just fine. Next time, I would just plan for a really long rise. A long rise (with a moist dough) makes lovely bread. It's how the French make their amazing breads.

  • Loosely lay some plastic wrap on the dough. Cover the bowl with a hot wet dish towel .

Also if your oven is gas. Put your dough in there. Do Not turn it on. The heat from the p UK lot light works well.

turn oven to barely on! set a pan of hot water on the bottom shelf or bottom of oven. put covered bowl of dough on next shelf up with tea towel over the dough. It will be warm enough to rise properly!

My kitchen is so cold I don't need to put the butter in the fridge and it will slice into pats very nicely, but won't spread nicely!

Do you have an oven? Turn it on low, set the covered bowl with the dough on top.

Turn your oven on to 300, let it heat up, then turn it off and give it about 10 minutes--then put the bread in the oven and leave the door open.
