You don't need Congressional appointment for the CGA. But you do need better scores. Also PLAYING volleyball isn't much. You need to be Captain, you need to have volunteer work, Boy Scouts... something. Your GPA is nice but the rest isn't making the grade, as it were.

Your test scores are more than fine, and quite typical for a successful USCGA admit. Also remember that math counts twice as much as reading (quite literally, in the USCGA admissions formulas) and writing counts not at all.

Unweighted GPA means more than weighted GPA (hard to say what "weighted" even means, since not everyone uses the same system), but assuming yours translates to something like a 3.9 unweighted, that's good too.

If by "play volleyball", you mean on the HS varsity, that's fine too. More sports is better, captain is better, but one varsity sport is usually enough, assuming you have other stuff too.

I'm also assuming you have the "standard" dossier of school clubs, volunteer work, community service, etc.

Given all that - you have a good chance.

Be sure to apply for AIM now (as in, within the coming couple weeks). It's the best way to determine if USCGA is for you or not. It's low cost, no commitment and only lasts a week.

    Good luck!

You really need to get the grades up immediately. The athletics are good but the grades are really lacking and you cannot get in if you are below a 3.5 unless you are a star on the football field. Speak with your counselor at school and see if you can take some summer classes next year that would boost your gpa. Also, you should be taking honors or ap courses. All service academies are heavy in math and science. You end up with an engineering minor along with your major.

Have you applied to AIM, Usna Summer Seminar, West Point SLS. Only a few days left to apply for Usafa Summer Seminar as the deadline is a month earlier than the others. The Sat Math which is weighted more heavily is well above the 75th percentile at Uscga. The Sat Cr is around the 40th percentile.

It kind of depends on achievement and leadership in volleyball and other activities. NHS is considered a sign of leadership; around 2/3 of service academy cadets/mids were members.

The Air Force Academy website offers outstanding advice to students prepping for a service academy, rotc scholarship or any highly selective university. Open all links to the right of the page. Be sure to open the "Character Matters" link and read it carefully."

Page 19 of Chapter 2 of the Naval Academy Catalog indicates classes for a high school student to take to make himself competitive for admission. The classes are arranged in a hierarchy:

Helpful to read the advice on prepping for college offered on Harvard's website:

    http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/pr...

The selection process is nearly identical at the Naval Academy, West Point, and the Air Force Academy, so, whatever is stated on one service academy website or in its catalog with regard to admissions, course selection etc generally holds for the others. If you read the following answer and open the links it should help to explain the selection process and the path to an appointment:

The application cycle for the service academies begins December 1 of junior year when the Air Force Academy begins accepting pre candidate questionnaires from juniors applying to attend the Air Force Academy Summer Seminar.

West Point SLS begins accepting pre candidate questionnaires in January. The Naval Academy Summer Seminar also begins accepting preliminary applications in January.

Uscga AIM begins accepting applications in February. It is best to apply to all since they are similar and going to one indicates to the Admissions Boards at all that a Candidate is well aware of the regimented lifestyle of an academy Cadet/Midshipman. An applicant needs Psat, Sat or Act scores to be considered for the Summer Seminars. The Psat Math section tests Algebra 1 and Geometry and should be taken the first time the Fall after completing these classes. The Psat is only offered once each October. The Sat Math section tests Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry and should be taken the first time the Spring of the year taking Algebra 2. The Act Math section tests these subjects and Trigonometry. An extracurricular reading program looking up unknown words in a dictionary helps with the Cr and Writing sections of the Sat:

Colonel Batchelder indicates the attributes SLS seeks in applicants:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRWc9GiSMCA

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m-egy9wQxo

All the summer programs seek pre-candidates with essentially the same attributes. Usna's is the largest accepting 2550, Usafa Summer Seminar accepts 1125 and West Point SLS 1,000.

    Good Luck!

Send a letter to your congressmen and tell them that along with a 2-3 paragraph on why you should be selected over a guy with a 4.4 gpa, 711 math sat, 661 writing sat, 591 reading sat, and is captain of his football team and volleyball team.

He or she will tell you what your odds are.
