Horse meat found in IKEA's Swedish meatballs?

http://www.clickondetroit.com/money/consumer/Horse...

Found this on the local news. I've heard people talk about how good IKEA's Swedish meatballs are -- now I wonder what they're thinking...

Did the IKEA executives really think no one would find out?

Like other companies that have been affected by this scandal, Ikea did not set out to intentionally deceive its customers. Whoever makes the meatballs for Ikea bought what they thought was 100% pure beef from its suppliers.

How exactly the horsemeat was introduced into the supply chain, and who knew about it, is what's still under investigation.

BTW, horsemeat isn't the only food scandal going on. It turns out a good portion of the seafood sold in America isn't what it claims to be. Unscrupulous fishmongers have been selling cheaper fish, like cod or pollock, as more expensive fish, like red snapper. Independent laboratory tests show that as much as 30% of the seafood in the US has been intentionally or unintentionally mislabeled in this manner.

The executives at IKEA acted very quickly in withdrawing the meatballs so I doubt they knew. With all the scandal about horsemeat in Europe, Britain, Ireland etc, it would have been silly to keep selling tainted meatballs.

Most people know nothing about the horsemeat industry. They market it as if all the horses are grassfed mustangs roaming the fields. In reality, 92% of horses slaughtered were raised as pets or used for eventing or horse racing. They given tons of drugs and treatments and almost every medication is clearly labeled, "Not for animals intended for human consumption." They do some testing on the meat, but no tests to detect the most common or harmful drug residues. Isn't that convenient?

I don't eat fish from the filthy fish farms in the far east and I would never eat horsemeat, either. Neither food is safe to eat.

I agree. Its not like they ought to record the ingrediant record. Persons are simply over reacting personally.... Horse meat is satisfactory and in lots of products available on the market, and men and women dont recognize. Its no longer like ikea said "a hundred% ground beef meat balls!"

Actually, I think that IKEA have been very honest about this since they informed the public as soon as they were aware of the information. The information was just received from the lab yesterday so Ikea new nothing about it until then.

IKEA's meatballs come from a well established food company in Sweden, Familjen Dafgård (the Dafgård Family). Familjen Dafgård's products and meals are sold in many shops here in Sweden.

When stories emerged of horse meat in burgers in the UK a few weeks ago, companies here in Sweden who do import some meat started to arrange for DNA tests to be done. Familjen Dafgård called in "testers" and were given a clean bill of health, so to speak. They then arranged for external tests to be done as well, and it is through this that a Czech lab has reported that it has found traces of horse meat. Dafgård's have asked for the results but haven't received them yet.

I have been following all the press releases from Dafgårds website and this is a translation of the latest news today:

    Swedish website: http://www.familjendafgard.se/System/Sidfotsmeny/L...

Press Release: Extensive sampling of Dafgård show no presence of horse meat.

Following yesterday's information from a Czech laboratory that a sample of meatballs may contain traces of horse DNA, Dafgård has expanded sampling of its products. Of the test results received so far, none has been shown to contain horse meat.

In 320 samples taken over the past three weeks, none of them contains horse meat. "We have received results for ready made food from our own tests, as well as from external tests. All of these show no traces of horse meat" according to Ulf Dafgård, CEO of Dafgård.

Samples have been tested at an external laboratory. For raw meat, 32 composite samples were taken and each underwent 10 different tests , The tests are in accordance with NFA directives.

"We will continue to test further samples and report the results regularly. If any sample is shown to contain horse meat the product will, of course, be directly removed from the market, says Ulf Dafgård.

Dafgård has tried to reach the laboratory in the Czech Republic for additional information on quantities and values but to no avail.

I find this disgusting. People should know what they are eating, especially if they think it's something else. These executives have no idea how untrustworthy they are being, plus, this is probably going to reduce the amount of customers at this shop. Ugh. :(
